GGT + Gambit 10, 11, 12 + Rybka leads with half a point

Post by rainhaus »

1) Firebird 1B wins the Englund gambit with 1,5 points ahead.

A40 Englund Gambit, Stockholm Variation

1.d4 e5 2.dxe5 Nc6 3.Nf3 Qe7 4.Qd5 f6 5.exf6 Nxf6

Black plays the gambit

The Englund Gambit is a rarely played chess opening that starts with the moves 1. d4 e5?! Black's idea is to avoid the traditional closed queen's pawn games and create an open game with tactical chances, but at the cost of a pawn. (Wikipedia).
Fritz Carl Anton Englund ( * 1871; † 1933) was one of the most important Scandinavian chess players at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1932 he organized at Stockholm a thematic tournament which started with the moves: 1.d2-d4 e7-e5 2.d4xe5 Sb8-c6 3.Sg1-f3 Dd8-e7 4.Dd1-d5. Based on this tournament the opening 1.d4 e5 was titled Englund Gambit and the played variation was called Stockholm variation (translation from German Wikipedia).

The gambit was accepted by all engines, but could hardly be won. As a gambit player Firebird got 3 points, Rybka and Zappa 1 point. In most games Black couldn't regain or compensate the lost pawn.
The average starting evaluation after 5. -- Nxf6 = -0,72 A bad evaluation, but a good indication for Black's performance.

2) Deep Rybka 3 wins the Zilbermints gambit with 1 point ahead

A 43 Zilbermints Gambit
1. d4 c5 2.b4

White plays the gambit.

In principle 1.-- c5 would be a gambit too, but this opening is called Old Benoni Defense!? Most of the engines would prefer the 2. d5-mainline instead of 2. d x c5 or 2. b4.
Lev D. Zilbermints (*1967, Newark, New Jersey) is an active American chessplayer (Chess Champion of Essex County, N.J., since 1995), who is well represented in the internet in discussing chess openings. A variation of the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit, is also named after him.
The birth of the A43 Benoni Zilbermints Gambit describes Lev Zilbermints as follows:
On 19 February 1995, while having a break between rounds at the United States Amateur Team East, I invented the Zilbermints Benoni. The very next day, I beat an old antagonist with it in a blitz match. Here is that historic first game:
Zilbermints-RalphNeplokh (1820)
1 d4 c5 2 b4! cb4 3 a3 Qa5 4 Qd2 Nc6 5 Bb2 e6 6 ab Bxb4+7 c3! and White won a piece and game.

For detailed report read on http://www.gambitchess.com/gambitchess/lzd1.htm

And the meaning of that gambit's history? You don't need to be a Grandmaster or an Elo giant eternalizing yourself with a chess opening name!

Black Wins : 14 (33.3 %)
Draws : 21 (50.0 %)

So far Zilbermints Benoni belongs comparatively to the more successful gambits, played by chess programs without an opening book.

The gambit was accepted by all engines.

Heinrich Wagner(August 1888, Hamburg – June 1959, Hamburg) was a German chess master. Wagner played for Germany in 4 Chess Olympiads from 1927 to 1931 and won team bronze medal at Hamburg 1930. Wagner was awarded the International Master title in 1953.

Not an overmuch risky gambit, or to be more precise, I see no gambit how it's normally defined! But I'll let it in the suite, as a curiosity :)
