I have no idea why the author the WB-application is called "gupta" - maybe with the meaning "mystery / secret" from Sanskrit, an Old Indian language.

But an external interface is not necessary - Gambit has its own GUI, too.

Gambit was called a further MAC OS X interface with Crafty Chess Engine which is now no longer available

Hi Norbert !

Its own GUI hasn't much features. Just now Gupta (the name Gupta is derived from Sanskrit goptri, meaning 'protector' or 'governor') plays in a tournament under Arena 3.0 GUI.

Hmmm... I downloaded it today and also extracted the engine alone with another tool.
BTW sourceforge itself claims a possible malware warning - probably someone reported a false positive there.

I noticed that size and date meanwhile is very different, (115Kb 2014/11) but more important,
it just sequentially plays the pawns from h to a as long as available.

In the GUI it plays 'normal' chess. I could not figure out if it relies on other files.
Did you add any commandline parameters? (The GUI has 1-5 strength settings)
If not, please send me your version from 2013 from this thread.

Today I fiddled again with it and with the help of Inbetween I could get
a different behaviour by adding a search depth parameter to it, by abusing an obsolete and ignored command.
I only tried 'sd 6' and 'sd 7' so far. The later one still worked for 40/360s.
(strangely adding the same commandline in the WB.ini did not work!)

Still the results are much lower than 1600-1700...

Note for future researchers (and myself for not having to check this again and again):

I changed the version indication for Gupta in the XB/UCI chronology to date-month.
The version number up to 1.04 only refer to the GUI called GambitChess.

The engine itself is unchanged since 2014-09 (code checked) and neither had nor will display any version.
