Did FM Yosha Iglesias cheat?

Post by dkappe »

We’re all familiar with the dubious “Let’s Check” analysis that FM Yosha Iglesias presented to a credulous public, in particular the social media whore Nakamura. But did Yosha cheat in his analysis to get that 100% result?

First a bit of amusement: in the Sinqfield cup, there was one 100% match game and three players with three 90%+ match games each. Just none of them were Niemann. The 100% was So. And Nepo, Caruana and Aronian had three 90%+ matching games each.

Now on to the possible cheating by Yosha. One peculiar thing I noticed in the video was the frequent occurrence of a peculiar engine in his display: Stockfish 7 Gambit-man (there are a few other unusual ones as well). Not exactly a popular engine during the time of the games being checked, i.e. 2020-2021.

It turns out that “Let’s check” has some options, namely that if it doesn’t match a move it can use one of your engines to match it instead. Enter a tuned or tweaked Stockfish 7 Gambit-man. As long as the moves are reasonable (no mistakes or blunders), you can tweak an engine to match them.

The weird list of engines in FM Yosha’s videos is at the least peculiar. But did he cheat in his analysis to get the result he wanted? He certainly has some questions to answer.

Did Nakamura apologize for his dopiness?
