Hans Niemann chosen to lead USA at World Team Championship

Post by dkappe »

Hans Niemann is the surprise choice to play top board for the six-player US squad at the World Team Championship in Jerusalem on 19-26 November. It will be the 19-year-old’s first event since launching his $100m lawsuit against the world champion, Magnus Carlsen, and others.

Looks like Norway will not take part.

It would be surprising if they did. They’ve only ever competed in one, the 11th World Team Chess Championship in Khanty-Mansiysk, 2017. They finished 9th, ahead of last place Egypt.

Looks like the most recent (2019) iteration of this had the US team as:

1. Swiercz (2655)
2. Sevian (2642)
3. Onischuk (2647)
4. Lenderman (2637)

Not exactly the very top tier in the US at the time.

And yet...for some reason the Guardian has the gall to say "Niemann is nationally ranked only No 8, so it is possible that some of those with higher rating including Hikaru Nakamura, who is among those being sued, and the current US champion, Fabiano Caruana, have declined to play in the same squad as the teenager".

If you check the 2019 FIDE list...Swiercz was (you guessed it) the 8th highest ranked US player at the time. I wonder if at the time the Guardian
had...any 'commentary' about that?

LOL!

I don't think 'top' US players have played there that one in a while...certainly not Naka or Fabi or Wesley

The link will change over time (page=17, page=18 and so on) as more news come.

The key excerpt from 2019:
The Guardian (1st March, 2019) wrote:[...]

The Champions Challenge ended on 24 February, while the US championship, also in St Louis, starts on 18 March with a prize fund of close to $200,000. The world team championship in Astana, Kazakhstan, is sandwiched between, so USA, who at full strength would have contended for gold with China and Russia, will be represented by a B team.

Hello jedrecista,

The World Team Ch for the one before that - 2017, board order:

1. Shankland (2676)
2. Onischuk (2685)
3. Robson (2656)
4. Xiong (2658)

More balanced, but again, none of the Top US players.

The March 2017 list I am looking at has Shankland as the ...8th highest rated US player; I'm not sure what month the rating listed for that tourney was, as Onischuk is slightly higher rated than Sam in the March list.

By the way, Niemann was 2282 in that list:

Yes, even the great Gukesh was only rated 2283 at that time. 2732 now...and even nicer 449 rating point jump!
