Assuming Windows OS, any engine speed can be throttled down using BES (Battle Encoder Shirasé).

Most likely certain Lc0 nets would suit this purpose.

But my old "Strangler" personality in Rodent III was had a very nice "boa-constrictor" style as well.

I've recently been experimenting with Komodo 14 but turning all king safety and dynamism options to 0 and using "Positional" style.

I kills some Elo admittedly, but you get a lot of very positional games.
I will try Komodo settings.

Could you explain how personalities are used in Rodent III? I found 2 directories of personalities (personalities and personalities_0210_onwards), but I didn't find any setting to choose a personality. Also, there is no 'strangler'. Is it something you created? For the setting I can do a workaround, e.g., saving the defaults in the polyglot ini file from xboard, and then changing the parameters in that file according to a personality of interest.

For some others who commented above, I am not looking for 'solid' style - for me solid means simply difficult to beat. Also, I am not looking for reduced strength. I want a strong engine that doesn't try to be flashy, but values restriction and prophylaxis, which, in my dictionary, is not the same as solid. I don't want an engine that just throws pieces at you, at times in an unsound manner. That is the style that can get boring for some people. On the other hand Karpov - Unzicker, 1974 - the Ba7 game - is not boring for me. I am not criticising Patricia here. If an engine chooses an aggressive line over a quiet line when two lines give the same evaluation, that is also a fine goal, and that kind of engine can also be interesting for practice.

Hi,

Alex
It seems that it is not a direct download link; requires signing in to gmail, and then wait for approval. Anyway, if it is windows only engine, it will not work for me. But thanks anyway.

By least aggressive, I don't mean solid and defensive but something that just tries to slowly suffocate the opponent, without being flashy. An engine whose main philosophy is restriction and prophylaxis. I would love to have such an engine.

Incidentally, I looked at Karpov's game (using pgn-extract filters for sacrifices) and he is on par with some of the other aggressive players like Topalov. But still I would not mind an engine that plays like Karpov. Has anybody analysed games by human players with EAS like tools?

But maybe a quest for 'styles' is futile; strong engines are the ones that play more objectively.
I have always thought Naum was 'solid'. Chess Tiger 14 is also solid, but a kind of 'active karpov' with its style. Nimzo 8 was also quite passive
