No, a basic qsearch() will also call evaluate() for non-quiet positions. But if the static evaluation is not good enough, and the opponent still has pieces hanging, the qsearch() will continue and search captures:

Generally latest version is clearly better solver than 17.1. But there are exceptions like this classic:

Something was lost then with the latest changes in Stockfish. But it may be a bit random, only one testposition.

I tried a september version of Omega now, from Eduard. So not the latest changes in Stockfish and it is better for correspondence chess. It finds almost the mate but then there is a search explosion again, with one thread so should be reproducible. I did not let it run very long it may resolve itself.
