To me (and I bet, a lot of other engine authors) it seems that most people that post here and in the tournament and matches forum care way more about results (numbers) than they should and barely care at all about the 'battle' of an individual game and any beauty that it might contain! This is often more frustrating than not being able to beat Rybka or even a much lesser program.
I just ran a 1+1 test match of new code that I am working on and have saved some interesting games that I would like to share to illustrate my point. The match was against Hamsters 0.2 that ended Romi +29 -9 =12.
First I would like to say that Hamsters also had some very pretty wins as well!
The first 7 games are nice wins by Romi that did not involve sacrifices and the remaining 11 games involve the mid to long term sacrifice of at least a pawn and at least once, a piece and also a queen sac.
Like I said, this is just from some quick testing and I chose the games quickly as well, so please do not be too judgemental about the quality.
It will be interesting to see if anyone has an opinion about the style of play or if all everyone cares about, is numbers.
And now the games!

If you are on a sidewalk and the covid goes beep beep
Just step aside or you might have a bit of heat
Covid covid runs through the town all day
Can the people ever change their ways
Sherwin the covid's after you
Sherwin if it catches you you're through

I still think we haven't seen the best from some authors like Stefan Meyer-Kahlen, Amir Ban, Robert Hyatt, Christophe Theron.. the list goes on.[quote
Just because Rybka is at the top now doesn't mean it will stay there. Hiarcs is closing on it, and I suspect Junior's next version will be a giant.
Peter[/quote]
I personally am not sure about Rybka not "staying there".
It's true that others are catching up, and may well eventually be a little better than the presently best Rybka. But a 3000+elo player (which is mechanized) will not easily be reduced to rubble, ever!
I am not sure if there will EVER be another engine that will beat Rybka at the same frequency as Rybka is NOW beating its top rivals. (Unless there is a particular few bugs. and peculiarities in Rybka which can be isolated and be exploited, in a concentrated effort, for the express purpose of making Rybka look destructable).

How many of ARE sure that there will ever be another engine that could beat the presently best Rybka at the same frequency as Rybka is now beating others?
Re: What Does It Feel Like to be Surpassed?
How does Romichess compare to Homer in respect to interesting sylte? I'm trying to find an awsome training partner!
Are there any other engines that can challenge these two in this respect, as well?

Re: What Does It Feel Like to be Surpassed?
I do not know how you define interesting. To me Rybka plays the most interesting games, it doesnt allow anyone to win that easily.maxchgr wrote:How does Romichess compare to Homer in respect to interesting sylte? Daniel, the author of Homer, has said that Romi has some big weapons!maxchgr wrote:How does Romichess compare to Homer in respect to interesting sylte? I'm trying to find an awsome training partner! Are there any other engines that can challenge these two in this respect, as well?

However, the learning mode of Romi is IMO the most interesting. The GUI has to allow the human to resign and then send a result command to Romi so she can learn the game. Arena, for example does not do this (unless it has been fixed in the latest release).
The short version is, Romi will if she is beaten, play your moves back at you in a future game when she has the other color. If Romi plays the same color then she will vary her play untill she wins. Once Romi wins, she will continue to play the same moves over and over untill you find a way to win. There is also random selection when Romi has more than one winning line to choose from.

Well I hope their egos will be crushed so that they will come back with a better program : )
Its to those who are not satisfied that the improvement depends on : )
