You overestimate the popularity of 7-zip on non Windows platforms.

The default file expander included for file in every new Macintosh handles twenty two different file formats, but 7-zip is not one of them.

Everyone I know uses 7-zip so to claim that it's obscure is a vague statement.
I have never liked 7zip, I prefer winrar, it can extract 7-zip format as well.

7-zip is free and open source - it also produces some of the smallest archives. :wink:

the main page does not make it obvious but from the downloads page there are links to numerious platform specific compiles.
