If black held two pawns, would you put a little "2" next to the black pawn in the holdings area? Otherwise you could display two black pawns in the holdings area, but you might run out of space this way.

The counters for the white holdings should be more right-adjusted, though.
Accounting for holdings on captures and (menu) drops already works, for unpromoted pieces. What I should add is that promotion will be to 'shadow' piece types in stead of the ordinary ones, and that these shadow piece types will be demoted to Pawn on capture. And I have to intercept and block dragging into the holdings or guard band, (even with legality testing off), and reinterpret dragging out of the holdings as a drop. And hack the legality-test routines, so that they work on a shifted version of the board.
But all that can be done in parts of WinBoard that I understand well.
