My dear Stuart:
Perhaps my elo is not good enough to interest you, probably I cannot distinguish between a Chessmaster 3000 analysis and one by Rybka, BUT I too concur with our pal, though this time for a very obvious and visible reason: Fritz is more entertaining because it has a gorgeous GUI and Rybka has none. Rybka is just a bare, so a boring thing, just another powerful engine, surely the strongest of all, but even so just an engine.
Engines, engines, engines. Man, chess life is also about the paraphernalia.
When I expend my money I want the full package: lights, frills, database, boards, etc. I can always not use them If I get tired, BUT I want to have the chance to use anything according my mood.
So Fritz in my view is zillion times more interesting than Rybka.

My best
Fernando

I could describe Rybka's style as "boring", so saying that Fritz11 has a more interesting style is not much, in my opinion.

Still wanting to KNOW what lunatic put the "magic eye" in the program for what reason! Thing is creepy  That aside It is undeniable that both programs are interesting to different people. However I too like frills. Let us all chant--"MORE FRILLS!" I suggest buying non chess base programs for one year then only chessbase prgrams the next! That should stir the pot!

From the help file:
For any 3D board you can activate a “Magic Eye” which visualizes the calculation processes of the engine. The moves are displayed using two laser beams directed at the board.

You can see the position from the point of view of the Magic Eye on the top left of the window. This is what the engine is looking at. The colour of the Eye always follows the position evaluation (i.e. green better for the opponent, red better for the engine).

Click on the little inlay window to change its size. Click “+” or “-“ below the inlay to zoom in and out.
To deactivate the "magic eye," click on SETTINGS when you are in 3D mode. Then, select "General" from 3D Board Settings. After that, you should see some options to your right. Simply uncheck the box to the left of "Magic Eye." Now, you don't have to worry about it.

As to the "lunatic" who came up with the magic eye idea... I don't know.

I am a lowly 1800 player, but can give my view from my perspective. Fritz moves make more sense to me (being, i think,is more of an attacker), whereas rybka can be awfully subtle and I don't always understand why it does what it does. But I would not go so far as to say rybka is boring. That sort of subtle, positional chess can be beautiful.

Really, though, does anybody actually play against fritz 11? I wouldn't. So far, after all these years, the only program i have fun playing against is chessmaster, and its weaker (1700-2000 elo) personalities. Somehow, Cm has done a very good job of creating personalities that are graded up the elo scale and quite varied in their play.

Right now, all you need if you are into playing chess is chessmaster + chessassitant (great analysis tool) + rybka (great analysis engine). If you got some extra cash, purchasing some of the other engines is cool because you can watch the engines play against each other (especially in your favourite lines). My only fear is that all the engines will emulate rybka and become too similar over time
