The Intel Q6700 have dropped in price to just over $200. This will give you 4 cores at 2.66 Ghz ... If you decide to overclock it you should easily be able to 3.2Ghz. This is some heavy duty hardware that can do a lot.

Yes, I have seen a system at Paradigit here in Holland that comes with a Q6700 for just 39.05 € more compared to the same system with a Q6600. It is not a cheap system and I don't really need graphics with 128 processors, but is sure nice to look at the pictures!M ANSARI wrote:The Intel Q6700 have dropped in price to just over $200. Seen this week on the news that the people in Cuba are allowed finally to buy computers, that is if they can pay for them with their low monthly income, on average 12.50 $, still it was heartwarming to see and I don't really know why, mainly I think it was the excited faces and the Christmas like atmosphere in the shops!

Try this good HD defragmenter after having emptied your recycle bin: http://kessels.com/JkDefrag/

Any of the known ones, as far I know.Norm Pollock wrote:A question about uci guis for a new computer.
What are some possible uci guis that would work with a 64-bit mp machine using Windows Vista Home Premium?
Thanks in advance.
This includes the upcomming Rybka GUI.

I really like Windows XP 64bit ... it is fast efficient and has a relatively small footprint. Also it is not as much of a target for virus writers ... and also is a lot easier to install into multiple machines without Microsoft validation headaches.
About 2 years I had some problems getting some drivers for some older periphreals that I had ... but really today it works just like normal XP.
Running Rybka on XP 64bit gives a 60% boost ... this along with the fact that it is fast and efficient with a small footprint (as compared to XP 32bit or Vista flavors) makes it my favourite OS.

Same here. And there's stability... You need one of the better Linux distributions to beat XP64 in this.makes it my favourite OS.
While Vista is still strugling a lot with various issues, I would go grab a copy or 2 of XP64 if I needed a 64-bit OS... while it's still possible... Linux aside.

I strongly support this.M ANSARI wrote:I really like Windows XP 64bit
IMHO this is the best OS Microsoft ever issued. Not a single problem with it on my quad for more than 6 months.
Unfortunately this OS won't be available any more for those wishing to buy it from june 2008 AFAIK.
Still there are those "second hand" resellers who sell original licences (with genuine installation CDs) that they bought from former MS customers.
I just got my XP pro X64 edition original CD with full licence for 140 $ this way ...

As far as you don`t stay in front of it watching Spybot do its job, that`s fine!
There are many ways to approach this problem:
1) Buy a Dual x Quad Xeon
2) Buy a Quad
3) Buy a Phenom
4) Buy a Core-2-Duo
5) Buy an Athlon X2
6) Buy a cheap Pentium-D
7) Stay with your computer
8) Wait for the next best and fastest processor to be launched
9) Forget about computers at all.
If you are too anxious to do 8, are not enough rich to do 1, not so happy with 2-6 and don`t want to 9, go 7.
