Tord, hi :-)

Both Tiger binaries run just fine on my Macbook (Core2Duo, 2ghz, 2gb ram). Appears that the Intel-64 binary and the universal binary run at the same speed (ca. 1.7 mill kn/s) when forced to analyse the first move for white. Thanks a lot for your relentless effort :-). BTW, I just love Glaurung's style. That speculative Bxh7 was the move to get me out of the woodwork after many montsh, figuratively speaking:-).

The 32 bit PPC binary runs great too on my Powerbook G4, so you should go back serenely to your viola and the accompanying chello.

Great, thanks! It's a pity the Tiger binaries are so much slower, though.

Thanks, but you may have to adjust some of the many evaluation parameters in order to get exactly the style you want.

Not quite yet, I'm afraid. I still have some GUI bugs to fix, and a million new UCI parameters to document. :)

Next thing to test:

Does the universal binary of the Glaurung 2.1 GUI work on all Macs running Tiger or Leopard? I've only tested it on a Core 2 Duo running Leopard. The current GUI beta can be found here:

http://www.glaurungchess.com/beta/Glaurung21.dmg

Important: If you have a previous version of the Glaurung 2 GUI on your Mac, delete the file ~/Library/Preferences/com.glaurungchess.plist before installing the new GUI.

The GUI isn't really that exciting. It is almost identical to the previous version, except for a few bug fixes and stability improvements. The engine itself, however, is considerably improved. It is stronger than before, and more importantly, has a more risky, speculative and aggressive style of play.

Because of a very annoying bug I still haven't managed to fix, the current GUI beta occasionally crashes during startup, or after running for a few seconds. If this happens, just restart it. If it survives the first 5 or 10 seconds of running, it should be reasonably stable.

The GUI works fine with Glaurung2.1 and Hiarcs11.2MP on my PowerMac G5.
Although, I still have the old problem that as soon as I select Fruit or Toga executable (any version) in the engine Install File requester the Glaurung GUI is gone. :(

Furthermore I have a small feature request:
- An analysis log file, where position analysis is appended as the PV changes.
- A very simple engine match window, where one can select a few engines and the GUI performs automatically a round robin tournament.
- An Icon
- Chess server (preferably ICC) support.

ok, I think I have gone overboard.

Edit: As another example, I can Install Hiarcs11.2MPUCI without problem, but with Hiarcs11.2SPUCI the GUI crashes (reproducable, tried both 3 times in a row). Does it require a Threads UCI parameter or something?

Not cool.

I remember you told me about this problem before, but I can't reproduce it on my Intel Mac, and I have absolutely no idea what is wrong. Does anyone else have this problem?

Planned for the final version.
- A very simple engine match window, where one can select a few engines and the GUI performs automatically a round robin tournament.
Might happen some day, but probably not before I have finished rewriting the GUI in Common Lisp.
- An Icon
I would love that, too. The problem is that I have no artistic skills whatsoever, so I'll need to find someone else to draw the icon for me.
- Chess server (preferably ICC) support.
Sounds like a lot of work. Not likely to happen any time soon, but maybe some time in the distant future. I'll have to add chess server support if I ever want to participate in the CCT or similar tournaments (using XBoard would make me feel like a semi-clone).

Oops, I edited my post above at the same time with your post.

I don't have access to my Mac rightnow but I remember that I had trouble to install my own engine into the Glaurung-GUI as well. Reason turned out to be a missing config file my engine would complain about and Glaurung-GUI unable to digest the Engine output about the missing file ('warning: roce.cfg not found') would just exit without further warning. When my engine didn't complain about the missing file everything was fine.

Maybe the problem with Fruit/Toga is related to that.

best regards

Roman and Andy,

Thanks to both of you for your guesses. My main hypothesis is that this is some kind of timing problem, but I am not sure.

Does this one work better?

I've tried to correct one possible timing problem. I hope it makes it possible for you to install all UCI engines.

This resolved the timing problem with Hiracs SP for me. It didn't resolve the problem with Fuit or Toga, although I'm not sure if there is a timing problem with these, too.
Let me describe. The problem with Hiarcs was that the Glaurung GUI quit after 1-3 seconds after selecting the Hiracs excutable. This is resolved now with the new version. With Fruit/Toga it's different. The GUI quits as soon as the executable is selected. I would guess within a tenth of a second. At the very same time I click on OK. I don't now if this description of any help, though.
