Yes, I think so too, there were some positions where other moves than the solutions get high evaluations from Ancalagon and they can't all be wrong, I hope 8-)

I think why Sredder 11 does not process the original arasan10.epd fully must have something to do with the used newline symbols, that show up as black squares when you open the document in Notepad. But what exactly is different with the FEN for # 167 I can't say. Maybe because at the start of #167 such a newline sybol is followed by an 8 because of an empty top rank and the eight is then processed as part of an ANSI code?

If I open the .epd document in Wordpad, -Wordpad also can open and display correctly textfiles prepared on a Mac, some older versions of Glaurung's read.me I believe had no working newlines visible when that read.me was opened in Notepad, only block characters instead of those newline symbols. But I checked the version that comes with Glaurung 2.1 and it is displayed correctly now - and now change something, save the document again, the .epd is now processed as a whole it seems, also by Shredder's GUI. All 200 positions are now seen and parsed but only 166 in the original arasan10.epd. What exactly is changed in the process is not clear and maybe it does not work everytime. But with the FENs itself I think nothing is wrong.

My copy of Arasan7.epd did not have non standard -Unix?- newlines, I have not checked more recent ones.

I ran the arasan10.epd with Naum 3.1 to test if the used chess-program made a difference in completing the whole set, this was done with the original .epd but no en passant square in #167, still only 166 positions were processed:

Thanks for the info, I will investigate.

I will also fix the newline problem Eelco had. (I used emacs to create the file; I don't use Notepad).

Arasan actually thinks d5 is best, but it found it only after eliminating the move Bd6 from consideration. Plus the scores are similar. So either this one should be removed or Bd6 and d5 should both be counted as solutions , it seems.

I ran suite with 4 engines in single Pentium 2400. Results Fritz10 151, Rybka3 149, Glaurung2.01 110 and Toga II 1.4 106. So this suite has little or any value in finding best engines. Toga is stronger in play than Fritz...

In 10.46 -Ra2 is the best move = mate in 10 as Chest shows! Surprisingly difficult to playing engines with/without bases...

Considering this eval:
14 20:46 800.071.976 657.565 +17.31 Kg6f5
It is very clear that Kf5 wins also. Even if Ra2 is a shorter mate, I would argue that both moves definitely win, and so one move is not better than the other.
Rybka would use Tablebase files, and I have all 3,4,5 and most 6 man tablebase files installed.

I would argue that both moves definitely win, and so one move is not better than the other.
I like this criteria, but rarely see it applied in test positions. For example, when you are an exchange up almost all moves win, but some moves might take 30 moves and others might give forced mate in 5. Using something along the lines of the Nunn criteria for an ! might be a nice approach to defining best move criteria for a problem set.
