Maybe it could use one of the new Intel Atom boards ?

It doesnt use many watts (17 under load i think) and people could upgrade ram etc. themselves.

Another idea for a homebrew chess computer:

Jewelry!

Take a small color LCD like a 3 cm display seen in cellphones, mount it on a same size printed circuit board, add a low power CPU/memory chip, programming connector, and a lithium power cell.

Attach the unit to a lapel, a backpack, or a purse. Set it to autoplay an endless sequence of blitz games.

Equip with bluetooth and it can play others of its kind.
