I greatly perfer a 2-D board.
In fact, I think I would prefer a chess board where the chess images were put onto coins and placed on the board.
Perhaps years of computer chess have bent my mind in some awful way, but I can see a 2-D board far more clearly and quickly than the real thing, even.

For computer chess only 2D.But I still like playing OTB chess with real pieces overall.3D boards progected on a 2D monitor just don't cut it.

Four years ago I played 3 games, TC=5min, on a real board, against a real
player. Very dificult for me, I like the 2D virtual board.

Agreed, when I play the chess programs,I use a real chess board and I use the monitor only to make the moves....Cubeman wrote:For computer chess only 2D.But I still like playing OTB chess with real pieces overall.3D boards progected on a 2D monitor just don't cut it.

Isn't chess two dimensional game - so why 3D board? I quess all commercial interfaces include 3D display with much programming effort - but probably none in the world uses them!

Bah, a real chess programmer prefers a chessboard just like his program prefers: in ONE dimension as an linear array 64 elements long.

For me it's 2D or DGT. 2D for Fast Online Time Controls, and DGT for Long Time Controls.Dr.Wael Deeb wrote:Agreed, when I play the chess programs,I use a real chess board and I use the monitor only to make the moves....Cubeman wrote:For computer chess only 2D.But I still like playing OTB chess with real pieces overall.3D boards progected on a 2D monitor just don't cut it.

With Aquarium and Deep Rybka 3 64bit I always use the 2D board because I don't need glitzy distractions when I am fighting for my life.
When I play that simpleminded Windows Vista Chess Titans program I always do 3D. I assumed that you were referring to hard-hitting killer chess programs and not toys.

PS You can use Chess Titans as a mental status test. If you can't beat it at the highest levels then you are either drunk, stoned or severely sleep deprived. IOW, don't drive your car if you can't beat
Chess Titans.
Chess Titans!, now thats a program that could use a Microsoft Update. I found it weak as hell on it's highest level. Maybe it could give my son a good game for a week or two however.

Ah well, best chess for me is still sitting in front of my opponent, a friend on a cozy occasion or be it a game in a club or a tournament, and then the obvious visual parts is 3D... The rest is kept insideswami wrote:3D board in chess? No way!
Chess is a mind game. Tactics...Tactics...Tactics. So I think I'd solve hundreds of tactical puzzles quicker and with more accuracy in a 2D board than I'd have under 3D.

Using programs for some reason, indeed 2D layout wins big, 3D however nice they may look doesn't provide what's needed; blindfold is more honest !
