well there were many dedicated models sold what were basically just handheld devices
some of the stronger ones could even play fairly good chess(2200 Elo)

but i guess modern day Iphones and Palm Computers and other similar devices could meet your requirements as well and they play much stronger then even the strongest hand held dedicated chess computers could

i guess, you refer to the Star Sapphire?

The Phoenix chess computers are also based on PDA CPUs: Reurrection I on a StrongArm 200 MHz, Resurrection II and Revelation on XScale 500 MHz

Sean, you could take a look at this:
http://www.zanchetta.net/CEboard/default.htm

With this program you should be able to connect a WinMobile PDA to a DGT or Novag Universal Board and use UCI engines, that were released for these PDAs.

And the best: It's free...

Here is another game showing that the "30 move" bug is history

I loaded up the Engine Black Bishop .98 into the Revelation and pitted it against a little known CXG dedicated computer ..the Sphinx Comet
The Comet has a 20 line opening book and the ability to play in several different styles

Image

i choose the "Defensive" Style which is supposed to make the computer play many pawn moves and exchange pieces whenever possible

Strangely ..the Comet as White chose to open with the Kings Gambit
hardly a defensive opening..but i guess it has many pawn moves in the begginning
The Comet was first to leave book at move 4
TC- 1 Min/Avg.

[White "CXG Sphinx Comet"]
[Black "Black Bishop .98"]
[Time-Control "1 Min/Avg."]
[Result "0-1"]

The Revelation and Resurrection II currently can only use Opening books that are embedded in a UCI engines .exe file
otherwise the UCI engine will play with no book or they can use the Noomen books which are hardwired into the Rev/Res II

The following is a list of freely available UCI engines that i have found so far that have at least a small opening book included in their .exe file:

Spike 1.2
Queen 4.03
Black Bishop 0.98
WJ Chess
Big Lion 2.23

does any one know of any other freely available UCI Engines that have an embedded book?

Thanks Regards
Steve
