it would be interesting to see an engine-engine match b/w gaviota & another (such as stockfish) from this position, with gaviota given a substantial time handicap.

If you give Gaviota a substantial time handicap against Stockfish, - I am not sure. :)

yanquis1972 wrote:another question to ask, for engines that prefer Nce3, is how they evaluate this position after a good think. this is kasparov's position after NxR b4

ivanhoe is showing near equal but nothing close to an edge for white after a couple minutes, suggesting simply 0-0 -.19.

[d]r2qk2r/1n3ppp/p2p1b2/3Np3/1P2P3/2P5/2N2PPP/3QKB1R b Kkq b3 0 2

imo it is is pretty amazing that gaviota found this move. miguel must've but a lot of positional knowledge in her (?)
Or a complete disregard for material :-)

Gaviota values piece activity very much. I just checked and the main reasons for choosing Rxb7 are 1) Big bonus for Nd5, 2) Big penalty for Nb7 (it is out of the game after b4) 3) no bishop pair bonus after the trade 4) black stays with a bad bishop

All this together is more than 2 pawns, enough to justify the trade deficit (just below two pawns).

Sometimes, all this backfires. In this case, I believe Gaviota is right.

I think that he meant to give enough time to compensate for the difference in strength (which is huge). The difference should be near 1:100 (~500 elo points?).
