Comments:
Exciting round! White rules in this round.
SmarThink won a nice game against Junior while Shredder continues its
rampage by beating poor Chess Tiger which suffered its 6th loss in a row.

Stockfish and Thinker decided to call it an early day with a proper GM-draw.

Sjeng was two pawns up in a rook endgame versus Zappa, but after 136 moves they had to split the point.
Komodo won comfortably against Crafty to move closer to the top.

The big question is: can anyone stop Shredder?

Comments:
Chess Tiger! Chess Tiger! Komodo had to give away half a point while
being clear favorite vs Chess Tiger. Zappa halted Shredder this round,
but none of the other leaders could win so the standings are pretty much
unchanged compared to the previous round. Crafty gave away half a
point in a drawish game when it suddenly lost on time. I have not decided
yet if I am going to let them play this game again, but if so it won't
change much in the overall tournament standings. Spark won a nice
game vs SmarThink while Sjeng beat Thinker.

It's very close, very even and far from decided!

I've decided to let Crafty and Scorpio play their game all over again.

The time controls for the whole tournament has now been changed to 90 + 15, meaning that with an average of 60 moves per game this time control will be exactly like 40/60,20/30+15.

I counted the average number of moves per game so far this tournament, and the result was 66. Basically this means that this new time control should give the engines just a little bit more time overall.

Hi Martin,

First of all, thanks for this tournament. It is a good selection of engines participating with a nice TC.

I know you are the TD and you can do what you think is best, but I wonder why are you going to replay the game? A loss on time is still a loss, even if the losing engine had a big advantage. Unless it was a gui problem or a PC trouble/bad setup on your side, I don't see a valid reason to replay the game.

Carlos

Thanks for your interest Carlos!

It seems from the Crafty logs that it was not setting the time controls in a
correct way. So basically this is my responsibility, since I would not have
included this engine in the first place if it wasn't capable of the time
controls used.

Therefore, I've decided to change the TC (as stated already),
and replay the game because:

1: I don't allow the engines use much of my CPU time just to go and
lose on time in the end of the game. I want to produce some nice games
with this fairly long TC. If an engine loses on time I feel that the whole
game is wasted since I wouldn't know what could have been the
result.
2: This is not a human tournament where losses on time should occur.
3: I am not interested in keeping games with losses on time.
4: If this was Blitz I wouldn't have bothered, but it's not (see point 1 again).

Anyway, the original game they played was probably drawn until Crafty
lost on time. The new game seems to be heading to a draw as well,
unless something dramatically happens.

So with this new TC each engine gets at least 15 seconds per move
which should avoid all possible losses on time from this point on.

I will of course apologize by changing the conditions in the middle of
the tournament, but I feel that this is the right thing to do at this point.

The upcoming Cutting Edge Team Tournament will also be using this new TC.

In this case, I agree it is a very good reason to replay the game.

I understand and I guess most of us agree with this, but still if an engine loses a game on time because of bad time management, the game should not be replayed IMHO. Not in this case of course, the reasons were others as you stated above.

I personally like the incremental tc and I think it is a good change.

The game between Crafty and Scorpio has been replayed and
the relevant Round 7 PGN has been updated for download.

Crafty managed to win so the only thing that happens in the
standings is that Crafty has 2 points instead of Scorpio.

Two games in Round 8 has been played so far so I will be back with a Round 8 report in a while.

Comments:
Some fantastic game this round! First... Crafty! I can't believe it didn't
manage to win after being mostly 3 pawns up versus Spark. You should
definitely play through the game, it was pretty wild.

Shredder was way too strong versus Thinker and check mated the latter.

Komodo had to split the point against Zappa. What is interesting with
Zappa is that it has yet to play 4 of the 5 bottom engines and that it still
hasn't lost yet. Zappa could very well be a contender for first place.
Shredder hasn't played Naum or Stockfish yet...

Scorpio won a wild and fun game against Chess Tiger.

Sjeng showed some nice tactics against Onno and won comfortably.
Onno hasn't won a game in a while now. But it has definitely proved
that it belongs in the top list of engines around.

Stockfish basically overwhelmed a struggling Junior to win comfortably,
which it had to do in order to keep up with Shredder.

Naum also had to win in order to have a chance for the top spot.
SmarThink came from a strong win versus Junior in the previous round,
but still it was nothing for Naum which won comfortably in only 44 moves.

The race for first place is definitely not over!
Please note that the standings has now been properly updated after Crafty and Scorpio had their 7th Round game re-played. Crafty won that game instead of Scorpio.

Comments:
A very exciting 9th round! Shredder was simply outplayed by Onno to
suffer its first defeat so far. This makes the top standings even tighter.

Thinker and Komodo shared the point in a fairly straightforward game.

Zappa outplayed Scorpio to take a real leap forward in the standings.

Chess Tiger held on to a draw vs Crafty. This brings Chess Tiger to only 1 point within Scorpio!

Junior played a nice game against Sjeng, capturing the whole point.

Even though the evaluation heavily favored Stockfish during the
game vs SmarThink, the latter held on to a draw. Very nice!

Also, Naum couldn't break Spark's defenses and had to share the point.

With only 3 rounds to go, anyone can win. Zappa has the easiest pairings
left. We will see a big clash in Stockfish vs Naum which can very well
decide the whole tournament!
