Go Gaviota!

Yes Miguel, all evals are from white's point of view.

I will add this to the rules page.

Thanks!
Gaviota (against Arasan) was having an interesting advantage (+0.50 to +0.80) for a long while and playing well positionally well. It was also a pawn up for a while too. However, the game was very tactical and it was a matter of time until there was a slip and things went down the pipes pretty quickly. It was very difficult when Gaviota was searching 14 plies and Arasan 21, but the game was really good.

I believe that not everything is tactics here.

stockfish can see 0.00 score at move 71 and does not see advantage for black from depth 12 so it seems that stockfish has better evaluation than gaviota that saw 0.46 pawns for black at depth 12 based on the pgn.

I am not an expert of evaluation of unbalanced postions but I guess that stockfish's evaluation is simply better here.

Yes Miguel, all evals are from white's point of view.

I will add this to the rules page.

Thanks!
Gaviota (against Arasan) was having an interesting advantage (+0.50 to +0.80) for a long while and playing well positionally well. It was also a pawn up for a while too.

I am sure SF evaluation is better, but that is not the point here. The important thing is what move is chosen. Gaviota needs one more ply to see that the evaluation after g5 drops. In fact, SF would choose g5 until depth 10. So, g5 is a natural move (advance a passed pawn) but some plies are needed to realize there is a problem. Depending how you prune or extend, or minor differences in evaluation will help to see the problem quicker, but you need 10-15 plies to see it. Gaviota was searching 13-14 and missed it The fact is, Gaviota's search is primitive and it is not a surprise that suboptimal moves at critical moments kill you. It is obvious I need to work on that (and other things too...)

Miguel,

It was a tense battle where Arasan picked the longest straw in the end. I think Gaviota gave it a great challenge.

However, the game was very tactical and it was a matter of time until there was a slip and things went down the pipes pretty quickly. It was very difficult when Gaviota was searching 14 plies and Arasan 21, but the game was really good.

Miguel
Miguel,

I just noticed that Gaviota's tbhits doesn't get recorded in ChessGUI,
but they are there (after verifying it in the debug files). I have
notified Matthias Gemuh of this.

Just letting you know to assure you that Gaviota is indeed accessing the
tablebases as it should even though it says tbhits=0 for all the moves.

If tbhits are posted in different info string than pv, you need "Parse UCI Junk" to grab them.

Matthias.
My engine was quite strong till I added knowledge to it.

Matthias.
I will enable this. Does it require much more system resources?

Hmm okay, I have the lag-free timing feature enabled so it shouldn't
be a huge difference then. I have also disabled stuff like graphics etc.
