Marek Soszynski wrote: Hi Ted,
First of all, I much prefer Scid:
http://scid.sourceforge.net/
Secondly, I haven't been able to get Shredderbases running under Linux either.
Finally, here is my precise NalimovPath as it appears in "Configure UCI engine":
/home/marek/Chess/Tablebases-Nalimov
Other settings:
Shredderbases - Never
Tablebases - Early
(Tablebase filenames are all lowercase without spaces.)
I have tested your very position, and Shredder running in Scid shows appropriate TB hits.
Hi Marek,
I think I tried using only a single directory but with no success, however I will try it again and post back with the results.
Thanks

Scid : setoption name NalimovPath value ~/Tablebases/TB4;~/Tablebases/TB5;~/Tablebases/TB6
Tildas dont work. It is an expansion honoured by the shell only
So replace that with "/home/hackin9"

My bases.ini file has a size of only 24 bytes and it is placed in the same path as all34.tbe and all345.tbe files. It looks like this:
I do not have Shredder Classic 4, so I can not say anything about it. If my tiny bases.ini file does not work for you (almost sure IMHO) I do not know how to get Shredderbases work for you, and help from other people will be required. I am not an expert in *.ini files!
Good luck.

hgm wrote: There is something fishy there:
SCID sends an 'isready' without waiting for the 'uciok'. But it doesn't wait for the responding 'readyok' after it receives 'uciok', but just sends a new 'isready'. As a result it seems out of phase in the remaining dialog, sending all option settings without waiting for the previous option setting to be processed, basically rendering the readiness queries completely ineffective. In particular the 'go infinite' is issued without waiting for confirmation of the last 'setoption' (which comes only after the 'go infinite').
Hmmm - it does send an "isready" straight after a "uci" for Quiet engines only (ie - those that dont announce themselves).
I wonder if it has any real side-effects ?

Well, it is a good question why it is sending all these isreadys in the first place. Normal procedure is that you send only a single isready after having sent all setoptions in response to uciok, to make sure you don't continue before the engine is done processing all the option settings.
Sending isready only makes sense when you want to wait for the readyok before proceeding. Sending an extra isready upfront subverts this. In particular you can now send 'go' before the previous setoption has been received by the engine. I think this is a protocol violation. Whether there are engines for which this is harmful, I don't know.

I have tried it that way as well with no success sadly. On the off chance my TB's are corrupt, I am re-installing them from another source. I will try using the full path name again and see if I notice any changes.
Thanks Steve.

Well I'm done, I don't know why I don't see TB Hits in the engine output window. I've tried Deep Shredder 12, Fruit 2.3.1, and Fruit 051103. None of these show TB Hits.
In the engine settings I've tried:
(A)
/home/hakin9/Tablebases/TB4;/home/hakin9/Tablebases/TB5;/home/hakin9/Tablebases/TB6
(B)
~/Tablebases/TB4;~/Tablebases/TB5;~/Tablebases/TB6
(C)
~/Tablebases
(D)
/home/hakin9/Tablebases
None of the above worked. I even checked the premissions on the Tablebase folders and sub-folders. So I am now at my wits end as to what is wrong. Like I said before the GUI (SCIDVSPC 4.7) see's them just fine and will show the winning lines from tablebase probes.
Thanks again

Yes - i'm stumped too. Shrdder Classic 4 has virtually identical UCI options (except no 'threads'), and works fine. fruit-2.3.1 also no problem. Here's my details incase it helps. (Of course my version has some changes against 4.7, but i tried vanilla 4.7 too, and it also works.)

Surprise, Surprise! It did help. However I don't know why. I ran SCIDvsPC as the root user and it worked. It really should work correctly as a standard user, but whatever I don't mind. I just created a shortcut in the menu system and prefixed it with gksu. I thought I had all the correct rights to run it as a standard user, but clearly the rights are not set correctly in something on my setup.
Thanks again for the help!

I run a root console, but all my Scid vs. PC testing is done as an unprivilidged user.
