Maybe it needs AVX support, first introduced by Intel with Sandbybridge, and first supported by AMD with Bulldozer.

The author has confirmed he used the AVX switch in the compile. He has now re-compiled without it, and it runs on my AMD Phenom II.

However, authors can always compile " to the old hardware"with hardware new.
It is harder compile "the new hardware"with old hardware.
Versions 64 bits vs 32 bits, ect.
It's something I do not understand.

Note from the author:

I just added a 64-bit executable that does not use "popcount" instruction. This should work on any 64-bit CPU.
It is posted at https://sites.google.com/site/fizbochessengine/
