1)Play with timeseal as stated. In engine vs engine lightning games if you don't have it there is a high chance your engine will lose on time (dead draws turn into losses).
2)Type "set minmovetime 0". If your opponent has typed this command too, there won't be a 0.1 second loss of time for each move. So your engine can play moves faster than 0.1 second which is impossible to do on FICS if you and your opponent haven't typed that command before.

I haven't experienced any problem with losses on time with xboard on FICS. Lag without timeseal is the culprit IMO.
