Basically you are right.
Stockfish is such a well optimized engine that as more the number of modification as stockfish will be weaker - this is my experience.
Most clones might be worse to equal strength compared to the Stockfish dev at a particular time, but that is not true for all Stockfish clones, and certainly not true of the clone by nodchip, Stockfish NNUE, back during this summer before the merger with official-stockfish. In the future, there may be another Stockfish clone that brings an innovative technology with rapid elo gains as NNUE did.
The example with Stockfish NNUE highlights one fact about Stockfish clones: any Stockfish clone siginificantly stronger than the official Stockfish dev would soon be merged into the Stockfish project itself.

I mean significantly stronger. And the answer is NO! Houdini 6 was at same level than SF dev. Obviously one individual cannot improve SF alone? I never download these clones - waste of time.
SugaR at it's peak period of Development and change a few year back was possibly a bit better than SF Development
and before that Chessowl.com spent quite a bit of time on Orca and Fried Shark and of course SF Shark...all of which are still pretty strong today (2700-2900 elo) The first one of these that actually got my attention was the Legendary "Fish Cooking" chess engine.. a personal favorite of mine (around 2675 elo) who I still occasionally run in my Chess engine tourneys...Why? I liked the name...Sometimes I run the engine(s) because many have very cool sounding and 'Slick Names' Inman also produced some very strong SF compiles a while back...CorChess today is one of the stronger ones along with Eman and at present day the legendary and versatile "RaubFisch". We shall see in 2021 just what is what...2021 KO engines champs draws near in June or July of 2021..Meanwhile LC0 gets better and better as SF seems to be leveling off...
