I use CoreTemp on hot days to keep an eye on things on my (now aging) desktop, an AMD Athlon(tm) X4 860K
It has a Tj Max of only 70C and I get very nervous if gets into the high 60s as it has suffered complete thermal failure on a few occasions.
The only thing to do is leave it off for a few hours and pray it comes back up!
I don't have any special cooling apart from taking both side panels off! :D :D :D

I have the Psensor applet running, with an alarm configured if the CPU temperature should reach 65°C. However, sustained full load gets me to around 46°C, or 50°C if summer is very hot. That's because I have an overdimensioned cooler on a CPU with 65W TDP class. The only probable reason for overheat is CPU fan failure, but that would require both (low RPM) CPU fans to fail.

I do. In the past you could setup a threshold temp in the BIOS to shut down the system, dunno about the new boards, I coded some scripts for Linux to read different temps (CPU/GPU/water) and shutdown, useful for running 24/7 with a good conscience.
