Re: Mate in 96.
Hi Peer!
Gave up too soon with proving DTM with engine, think I even had your or very similar settings of Chest's but did always get "no mate in 96".Giving you params a try right now, that was so again with SearchOrder KPX
Just changing that to "only_CRK" made it work.
Anyhow, closing GUI and restarting it, KPX did work then too,
Chest yet is something for experts like you as for finding best pamaeters for pieces of art like this one. And it's some kind of mystery of its own once and again still to me.
To be honest, I alos doubted the DTM, always giving away some moves with Black at my interactive trials as it seems.
Thanks for that to your as well as to honoured Mr. Hobacle, regards
V'ery good work of yours too!Spliffjiffer wrote: ↑Sat Sep 17, 2022 5:06 am Fantastic precision Hobacle and a great way to say goodbye to the Queen...Thank You !!

Chest can confirm your claim...these are the parameters that worked fastest for me:
[C2/R0/K8/P6/X13]
Gave up too soon with proving DTM with engine, think I even had your or very similar settings of Chest's but did always get "no mate in 96".Giving you params a try right now, that was so again with SearchOrder KPX
Just changing that to "only_CRK" made it work.
Anyhow, closing GUI and restarting it, KPX did work then too,

Re: Mate in 96.
hello Peter
thank you for the kind words !
its honestly not that difficult as you think to find such parameters...the most restrictive ones (eg C=6 is even more restrictive but the program gets a bit slower surprisingly) are timeconsuming to find, yes, but not really challenging to find...
im absolutely sure that you found P=6 as well and the 2nd important thing is to recognize that black can never give a check (C=2)....i didnt checked it but id suppose that if you set K=0 and X=0 (which means that Chest sets these parameters to zero and then it will automatically raise these values until eighter a mate is found or there is no mate with the other settings you chose) and run Chest it will not take immensely much longer to find the solution !?
the way to find those "perfect" parameters is always the same:
1. find any solution (in this case it was the one that YOU gave with mimic)
2. begin somewhere in the end of this line to start your initial search with Chest while u set mode=special and set C/R/K/P/X =0
3. make some thoughts about the speciality of the position (here: only 6 black peaces can ever move (P=6) and there will never be a check by black (C=2...you can also set C=-1 and Chest will search for this automatically)
4.experiment with some of the other parameters and test when it will fail to find the mate and try sth between the last "working" value and the one that just didnt work anymore
5.after you found some promising parameters this way you go further back to the root-position slowely and adjust the parameters if they will not work anymore suddenly
6. afer hours of testing you found the "perfect" parameters
im also quite convinced that Hobacle by hmself did something similar...the complexity of the position is just too high imo...as a human without any computerhelp i wouldnt solve this within 100 years

Re: Mate in 96.
Even after the pawns are blocked, SF derivatives still trouble to find the mate (in 32 moves or so). Only zugzwangs lead to mate the king on h6, maybe it's the main problem (null moves ?).
I forced 1.Qa2-Qd2+ Kb1 because the engine bugged and want to draw immediately with Qa2-Qc2+??.

Re: Mate in 96.
i did a review...some observations that i was able to do...id like to give another variation of my previous solution.
in terms of "perfect DTM" ...in the line i prefere below i found these limits...i was trying to to make it more understandable for me as a human although i must admit that its not clear at all to me to see every nuance:
white needs to find not less than 76 "only moves" :
1.a4!!; 2.a5!!; 3.a6!!; 4.a7!!; 5.a8Q+!!; 7.Qe8!!; 9.Qg7!!; 10.Qh6!!; 11.Qh7!!; 12.Qe4!!; 13.Qh7!!; 17.Qh3!! 18.Qg4+!!; 19.Qe4+!!; 21.Qf5!!; 22.Qh3+!!; 23.Qh5!!; 24.Qh3!!; 25.Qh4!!; 26.Qh5!!; 29.Qh5!!; 30.Qf5!!; 31.Qb5!!; 32.Qb8!!; 33.Qc7!!; 34.Qc3!!; 36.Qc4+!!; 37.Qb5!!; 38.Qc5!!; 39.Qd5+!!; 40.Qf5!!; 41.Qg4!!; 43.Qh5!!; 45.Qh5!!; 46.Qe8+!!; 47.Qxe7+!!; 53.Qe3+!!; 54.Qe8!!; 55.Qe7!!; 56.Qe6!!; 57.Qd5+!!; 59.Qb4!!; 61.Qd3!!; 62.Qc4!!; 63.Qb3+!!; 64.Qa2!!; 85.Qd2+!!; 66.Qc3!!; 67.Qc1!!; 68.Qd2!!; 69.Qc2!!; 70.Qa2!!; 71.Qa3!!; 72.Qa4!!; 73.Qa5!!; 74.Qa6!!; 75.Qb5!!; 76.Qb6!!; 77.Qc5!!; 78.Qc6!! 79.Qd5!!; 80.Qd6!!; 82.Qe6!!; 83.Qe7+!!; 84.Qf8!!; 85Qf7+!!; 86.Qe7!!; 87.Qf6!!; 88.Qf8!!; 89.Qe7!!;90.Qf7!!; 92.Qf6!!; 93.Qe7!!; 94.Qg7!!; 95.Qg6!!; 96.Qh5++!!
and black needs to find 73 "perfect" moves :
4..Kf8!! 5..Kg7!! 6..h6!! 7..Kg6!!; 8.Kf5!!; 9..h5!!; 10..Kg4!!; 11...Kg5!!; 12..h4!!; 13..Kf4!!; 14..Kf5!!; 15..Kg4!!; 16..Kg5!!; 17..Kg6!!; 18..Kh7!!; 19..Kg7!!; 21..Kh8!!; 22..Kg7!!; 23..e4!!; 24..Kg6!!; 25..Kf5!!; 26..Kf4!!; 27..Kg4!!; 28..Kf4!!; 29..Ke3!!; 30..Kd4!!; 31..Ke3!!; 32.Kd4!!; 33..Kd5!!; 34..Kd6!!; 35..Kc6!!; 36..Kd6!!; 37..Ke6!!; 38..Kd7!!; 39..Ke8!!; 42..Kf8!!; 41..e3!!; 42..Kg7!!; 44..f6!!; 45..Kg8!!; 46.Kg7!!; 47..Kh6!!; 48..Kg6!!; 49..Kg5!!; 50..Kf4!!; 51..Ke4!!;52..Ke5!!; 53..Kd6!!; 54..Kd5!!; 55..Kd4!!; 56..Kd3!!; 57..Kc3!!; 58..Kd3!!; 59..Kc2!!; 62..Kb1!!; 64..f5!!; 65..Kb1!!; 66..Ka2!!; 67..Kb3!!; 68..Ka3!!; 69..Kb4!!; 74..Kc7!!; 76..Kd7!!; 78..Ke7!!; 80..Kf7!!; 81..Kf8!!; 82..Kg7!!; 84..Kh7!!; 85..Kh8!!; 86..Kg8!!; 87..Kh7!!; 88..Kg6!!; 89..Kh6!!; 90..Kg5!!; 91..Kh5!!; 92..Kg4!!; 94..Kh4!!; 95..Kh3!!
good luck for any human to find this
