I think ChessBase will continue to develop Stockfish derivatives. Their average customer will probably be willing to pay some money to get a product that works out of the box instead of spending time to get the free version to run.

The 'average' person is paying for a good - works, current, gets updates - GUI to use Stockfish (or any other free engine) in. Stockfish is...useless without a GUI to run it in. Lets not think chess people are as 'dumb' as some might like to portray them.

I can't see that the judge made any determination of that. You could say that Chessbase acknowledged the SF team's assertion that it is, but I think that is about it. What Chessbase should take away from this case though is that they should do due diligence on any such product that they offer for sale.

Seriously, I think Chessbase knew they were breaking the GPL when they did it...as well as when they were taken to court and what the consequences would likely be. So, in the end, if there is no real 'punishment' (a 'slap on the wrist' is hardly 'punishment')...Chessbase 'wins' because they defacto got away with it.

I know that's an amoral way to look at things...but it is commonplace in the business world...politics...heck, life in general to many in 2022. Will to Power 101.

Good, it seems to me that ChessBase was likely the last person next to Houdart himself who wishes to say otherwise especially when they were getting sued for it, even if they knew it was a clone.

As for the sentiment, before people were talking about ChessBase entrepreneurship gonna stomp the SF hippies in the legal battle, now it appears those hippies got everything they wanted with the settlement and it was apparently due to the high cost that ChessBase lost their spine. It was never about the merit and it was always someone elses' fault that got ChessBase into the trouble. ASilver is their new scapegoat? I wish they make him the FOSS compliant officer and see what happens.
