Downloading both folders, mounting drives, installing, unmounting, patching files, applying a fix, and then finding a workaround for not having a physical CD - that was at the limit of my ability. But after an hour or so I got it working! Thank you so much, total blast from the past!
Incidentally CM9000 running natively hits 2 million nps, CM5000 above in Windows 95 in Dropbox hits 30,000nps: a massive 60x speedup!
Glad you were able to get it to work.
The King was always a relatively slow engine, but I suspect that DosBox and other stuff is getting in the way of some performance for CM5K. I think the engine, running by itself in today's hardware, should be able to reach at least 500K NPS.
Sadly, I only have CM9, and on my hardware it gets about 1.3M NPS.
Why not CM11K? It is the latest edition, the most powerful The King engine, MP capabilities, 64-bit, enough speed (for a human), unmistakable game style....a superb graphic interface....and it works perfectly in Windows 10 & 11.

I never saw CM11, but I know CM10 was quite buggy. That was the first version released by the developers in Romania, and I don't think they fully understand all of the interactions between the UI and the game manager code. It's possible that CM11 fixed most/all of the issues that I saw, one of which is that it was very easy to get several windows (particularly the Mentor functions) out of sync with the game if you went back and forth through a game fairly quickly.
But, yes, if CM11 fixed those issues, it is probably a better choice than CM9, simply because of the newer engine and even more teaching content. But, note that CCRL says that the default engine in CM11 is only 35-40 elo stronger than the one in CM9.
