I assume we can eventually figure out what is up. I suppose I can try to cobble together a (gag) windows machine to test on...
Daniel Jose's 64-bit compile works fine for me on both popcount and non-popcount machines, so I'm using that at present. :)
I'm using Windows 7 64-bit.

Just so you have the 12/27 version, you should be OK. But others are reporting that version is crashing, doing weird things with fine #70, etc, but only under windoze... Not sure what is up yet...

I'm using the latest version that Daniel posted - crafty25_64 (dated 28/12).

I have just started a tournament to test some crafty versions.
Early indications are that JA versions perform best.

Code: Select all

Program Elo + - Games Score Av.Op. Draws
1 Crafty-25-dc : 3186 224 196 13 80.8 % 2936 23.1 %
2 Crafty-25-32-ja : 3070 153 137 11 63.6 % 2973 54.5 %
3 Crafty-25-64-ja : 3038 210 206 11 54.5 % 3006 18.2 %
4 Crafty25_64n : 3033 163 163 11 50.0 % 3033 45.5 %
5 Crafty25_64 : 3032 180 177 11 54.5 % 3000 36.4 %
6 Crafty-25-64-pop-ja : 3019 185 179 13 57.7 % 2965 23.1 %
7 Crafty25_32n : 2869 188 205 13 26.9 % 3043 23.1 %
8 Crafty25_32 : 2780 228 275 13 15.4 % 3076 15.4 %

I understand. It seems that the newer Microsoft compiler has some sort of an issue with something inside Crafty...
I can confirm that the latest MS compiler has issues.
When I do the VS 2015 build, it crashes in EGTB access.

It seems that the Intel and gcc compilers work OK on this code base.

'chmod 755 <filename>' for the GUI to recognize the app.

Hi Jim,

the non-popcount exe doesn't recognise the rc file under ChessGUI.
Hi Graham,

that's odd seeing as it reads the file on the command line and in other chess interfaces. I'll see if I can replicate the problem and see what's going on.

Jim.
The issue is this: ChessGUI has a control on the screen where you can enter an engine's configuration file path and name. When you go to populate it, a file windows opens up for you to point to the file. With Daniel's compile (and everything else) the file windows has "all types", i.e. *.* so you can select it. With Jim's compile, the file Window opens up with Ini file as the type, and *.ini, and that cannot be changed. So you can't point to the file. Very odd. But it doesn't really matter, the engine reads the rc file anyway at initialisation and you just edit it with Notepad first.

Sounds like a permissions problem of some sort.

Jim.
