on and off developing for the past 6 years has finally brought me to this post. It's not strong, there's much more to be done and now I'm reconsidering my career choices.

I don't think there are rules for this. Only, it might cause confusion, creating the impression that the authors and the engines are the same. For example, ChessMaster has lots of variants, all by the same author and all starts with the name ChessMaster, e.g. Galadriel, Gambit Hero, Gil Galad and many others. Or Chess Tiger has a variant caled Gambit Tiger. I'm sure there are many more.

I think people are taking this whole 'plagiarised thing' too seriously. Chess is just a game after all but some people are taking it way too seriously.

Personally I would like there to be a Houdini 7 and even a Houdini 8 and I believe that if Houdini 7 will play very strong chess and is a much bigger improvement in playing strength over Houdini 6 then many people will want it, regardless if it's a Stockfish clone or not.
