it is a single chip but Novag does not say which single chip processor

since Novag likes to utilize the H8 processor my guess would be a single chip H8
but a H8 is a relatively powerful CPU
as i have now received a Star Beryl from a dear friend as a gift i will do intensive and exhaustive analysis of the computer
in the next weeks
sounds interesting!

if your tests confirm Jonathan's impression, this thread could make me buy one! (if it was just a little cheaper! )

for just 20 Euro more you get a much(!) stronger Star Ruby regards,

this is of course true
if one is interested in having only a limited number of chess computers to play against then it really makes no sense to pay $100 for a 1500 Elo computer when an additional $25-$30 can bring a much stronger computer

but as a collector one tries to add to the collection proper computers of interest
playing Strength although of course taken into consideration is seldom a significant factor in adding a computer to the collection

well said!

But on the other hand, i would not call a Star Beryl really a collectable item (at least at the moment; 20 years from now i will maybe bang my head against the wall, as i did not buy a Star Beryl, when it costed less than 5000 Euro! )

of course, but i don't think, that it makes much sense, to wait until i get it as a gift too!

if i had always done so, my collection would be rather small!

another good word from you!

if it really proves to be the strongest 4K dedicated, then it would be worth an entry in the

Hi Robert,

One of the things I intend to get around to is a 10 game match at 40 moves in 2 hours with the Mephisto II I won on eBay. I expect Mephisto II to convincingly win the match, however I expect the little Beryl to give MII some scary moments with it' surprisingly fast tactical selective search and tricky little openings book.

How much do these Star Beryls cost in Germany out of curiosity?

As for the processor, I opened mine but it is one of those processors that is just a nameless, black, circular blob. I am very doubtful it is an H8, since I don't even think they are packaged with the ROM and RAM as specified for the Beryl (4K ROM and 768 bytes RAM). Furthermore, there is no external clock generator for the CPU speed, and every H8 I have seen has one of those.

Uncertain Regards

Jonathan

PS: Beryl really needs about 45 seconds per move minimum to play decent, passable chess - but unlike most chess computers, it benefits much more from the full 3 minutes.

I have killed my Star Beryl Plus. Unfortunately.

I was so tired of not being able to see if it was an E or F in display, so I did something desperately. I opened it. Pulled it down. Cut a bit of the lower plastic over the LED and put it together.
The display worked then. I saw the message without leaning forward. Only one little detail. It answered only from row 1 and row 8. I am rather technically, so I should have managed to do it. But something got wrong. It tried to rebuild it carefully, but the same result.
So I have killed my Star Beryl Plus.

Could be worse. I have not killed my Mephisto Modular MMll. Yet. :)

The Elders has known of your murder and has condemned you to a harsh punishment that will be materialized by Shach Polizei any moment from now on.
Nevertheless, you still can avoid death just sending me the MMII you mentioned.

Time is running regards
