you could say the same about moderators - they should all resign so elections that are overdue are held.Graham Banks wrote:Perhaps, but it would be nice to think that some of the engine authors valued principles such as integrity, honesty and credibilty.Harvey Williamson wrote: I think sometimes people, here, think the normal rules of marketing and sales and press releases do not apply to Chess programs for some reason.

On a serious point from someone who spends most of his life inside Press conferences and interviewing people and politicians. If a question is asked and you get answers like the ones given above, which are not incorrect but.... It is up to you to follow up and challenge the answer given and not just say thank you so much for your answer. Someone knew enough to ask the question about Rybka the time to challenge a well spun answer was at the time not weeks later.Graham Banks wrote:Perhaps, but it would be nice to think that some of the engine authors also valued principles such as integrity, honesty and credibilty.Harvey Williamson wrote: I think sometimes people, here, think the normal rules of marketing and sales and press releases do not apply to Chess programs for some reason.

That must mean Hiarcs is number 1 according to you.can you name any major company, fighting to be number 1, that admits they are not number 1?
The question in the title of the thread implies playing strength not sales. What do you mean by nimber 1? In sales its nowhere near number 1.
Now why would you need elections when we are all getting on so well as it is?you could say the same about moderators - they should all resign so elections that are overdue are held.

Atleast Junior team were right about asking for sponsors, butShai Bushinsky: This open letter was distributed a day before we went to Elista. It is difficult to understand the timing and the content of the letter. Junior and Rybka participated in the World Championship in Turin, and the results are well known. I cannot recall a precedent from the history of chess, in which one top player gambled with another one in a winner-takes-all match. If there was a serious sponsor, then we could consider playing such match. However, no sponsor is mentioned in the letter.
I wonder why did they even add that the guy had never written a chess program,he is an organiser and a FIDE president and I wonder if Kramnik or Topalov have rights to say the man has no super GM norm and that they find it strange that the letter from the other grandmasters for challenge was written to him.I bet not. Also, the letter is addressed to Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, who has many excellent qualities but has never written a chess engine, as far as I know. It is very strange that the letter is addressed to him.

Show one dishonest comment by Amir Ban or Shay. They only answered the question that was asked. There is no reason to say, Rybka is number one go buy it.Graham Banks wrote:Perhaps, but it would be nice to think that some of the engine authors also valued principles such as integrity, honesty and credibilty.Harvey Williamson wrote: I think sometimes people, here, think the normal rules of marketing and sales and press releases do not apply to Chess programs for some reason.

Well it's not direct dishonesty, but how would you expect most of us to answer the following question?Tony Thomas wrote:Show one dishonest comment by Amir Ban or Shay. They only answered the question that was asked. There is no reason to say, Rybka is number one go buy it.
Q: Do you consider Rybka being among, let’s say, top three or top five chess engines?
How many would answer like this?
S.B., A.B.: Yes. Rybka shared the 2nd-3rd places in the World Championship in 2006.
Quite often it's what you're not prepared to say that tells more than what you are prepared to say.

What would you have them say? The bottom line is they have promote their product. They don't want to say anything that might hurt sales.Graham Banks wrote:Well it's not direct dishonesty, but how would you expect most of us to answer the following question?Tony Thomas wrote:Show one dishonest comment by Amir Ban or Shay. A few dozen in-people in the world would laugh. The rest never heard of Rybka. Go to a general store and you will see Fritz, maybe even other CB engines, but not one single Rybka.Graham Banks wrote:Let's put it this way. If they can't humble themselves to admit that Rybka is the strongest engine at present, they must be seriously deluded. They'd certainly get laughed out of here!
In other words, Rybka made it to CCC, Fritz to CNN. So they can say whatever they want and no one relevant will laugh.
It’s PR and politics. I think you pay too much attention to CCC.
