tiger wrote:NSEW and MoreSel are obsolete settings. They are read and written from/to the CT.INI file but they are never used in CT2007/CT2007.1. You have correctly noticed that they do not affect the program's behaviour.

SelSafety controls switching from nullmove R=2 to R=3 (R is the reduction after a null move, in plies). With a higher value of SelSafety, switching to R=3 happens later, so the search is safer. With SelSafety=0, a null move reduction of 3 (or more!) is applied almost everywhere in the search, except in the endgame where it is applied when there are 2 plies left before the horizon.

Another parameter you can play with is "LargeurFen". It is the width of the default alpha-beta window, in centipawns. Minimum is 1, maximum is 30000. A smaller value could speed up the search somehow, at the expense of more search instabilities. A larger value will give less re-searches, so the search will be more stable, but it should also be slower. The default value, 90, has not been changed for 10 years, so who knows...

Thanks much for your explanation Christophe! I will try some experiments with changing the alpha-beta window a little bit, that could be promising for longer time controls or for analysis. It was very interesting to read some details about Tiger's inner workings! I hope one day Chess Tiger will have some more parameters to play with! A chessprogram, to me personally, somehow does not seem complete without having some adjustable options.

I had not thought about changing the value for LargeurFen, because eh.. I thought it had to to with the length of the Fen-string input.. :oops:

Fenetre = window of course!

Thamks Dr. WB,
Ran an ovenight match against Genius 6.5 at 40/4, From the game score I clearly pitched Movei in at too low a level! Movei paired with S9 book and ran in DJ10 GUI. Genius 6.5 in own GUI and book. Had set Movei hash to 512 Mb but noted in Task Manager that hash was capped at 256 Mb.
Score:
40/4 + 40/4

1 Movei00_8_438 512 Mb S9 Book +24/-5/=17 70.65 32.5/46
2 Genius 6.5 +5/-24/=17 29.35 13.5/46

Games available in pgn (Genius record) and cbv format (Movei record) from: http://www.sendspace.com/file/de6lje

However some interesting games but match came to abrupt halt at move 72 in game 47 where in the position below Movei/Chessbase GUI registered a knight underpromotion by Genius as a Queen promotion. This may be some incompatibility between the older Genius Autoplayer and the CB DJ10 Autoplayer as opposed to any problem from Movei.
