Very weak? I suppose everything is relative, but achieving the level of Deep Fritz 10 still seems pretty high for a tactics only engine in my opinion. I think it should be possible for Vasik to get even faster solution times out of Rybka but it would hurt the strength in games.

We had Rybka, then there was Strelka, and now there is Belka!

I have just installed the latest version in Shredder 9 GUI. At first I tried installing it as a Winboard engine with wb2uci converting the output to the GUI, but this did not work. Then I remembered that Strelka 1.8 was already a UCI compliant engine so wb2uci is not necessary.

Belka Beta, compiled by Wildcat's author Igor Korshunov is not quite finished I think, it has some problems finding Nxg6. Also notice that starting at 11 ply the PV output is only given after completing the full ply in Analysis mode, I don't know if that is intentional.

Is Belka Beta available for download or is it private?

Hi Dave,

I believe that Evgenii wrote that Igor Korshunov would like to see some systematic tests comparing the Belkas with the Strelkas using his own set of openings.

There was a link yesterday given to the latest version by Evgenii in a reply to Tony in the Tournament and Matches Forum, that's where I saw it but the post seems to be no longer there :( , so I think it is possible somebody, maybe Igor complained about making the Belka version public or maybe he has stopped working on the Belka engines. If you would like to volunteer for Beta testing David then maybe Evgenii could help you further but probably they don't need any more testers right now.

Maybe there are other programmers that would like to have some more dedicated testers? I think it is always good to get some results on a lot of different machines, it is very easy to tune too much for a single system or a limited set of test conditions.

My regards,
Eelco

Hi Eelco,

Actually Strelka does this also, so probably for some reason intentional but very annoying for the user, certainly on longer analysis when you get the output only when the ply is completed.

Chess Tiger does this also, but only in multi-variation mode.

I have complained on this forum about this both regarding Strelka and Tiger, but until now the authors seem to have bananas in their ears or they do not recoginze it as important enough.

Love them anyway :)

Best regards,

Kaj

Apologies Re: Start Your Engines!

Post by Eelco de Groot »

I am sorry for some meaningless looking posts here, with rather colourful fonts where I would like to have used some much more colourful language but I think the charter would not have it. My apologies if this is my fault but some posts that were removed kind of got to me.

By the way if you are looking for the Belka links they are somewhere buried beneath all this in the post by Evgenii.

I see only one link in the post by Evgenii, the link to version 1.8.7. Are there more Belka links somewhere?
