Chessmaster is mostly known for its features and mainly designed to suit kids, it has never been the number 1 in engine rankings in the past 10 years as far as i know, chessmaster is good at teaching,features,pretty strong too but nowhere near in strength compared to Rybka, engines like Hamsters,Alaric,Movei could well overtake chessmaster in a few years strengthwise, they are not underrated unheard of engines anymore if you follow the ratings list ,things have changed much since the olden age. :)
