I think it would be a mistake to drop Gulko-Saidy it is 100% sound. Kurt Utzinger also shows that Shredder 10.1 has no problems with the position. I also like it because Rxd5 is the only move that clearly wins. Yes it's hard and will not be solved by most programs within a minute, even on fast hardware - but if the test suite is to be useful for a number of years there needs be positions that will show the strength on tomorrows tactical monsters.

Here is Glaurung's analysis on my 2 Ghz laptop:

I can take another look - my concern was whether Rxd5 scored a lot better than Bxh6 (Glaurung seems to indicate it does - and also selects Rxd5 much faster than other programs).

Jon,

Toga also find Rxd5 quickly and gives it a big plus. I quite sure it's sound - axb3 also seems to be a little better than Bxh6, both of which give white an advantage but not a clearly winning advantage.

Ok, I will put back in Saidy-Gulko, replacing this one, to keep it at an even 300:

r5k1/b1pr1pp1/2p4p/4p2q/Q1P5/2B1P1P1/P2NbP1P/1R2R1K1 b - - bm Rxd2; id "arasan5.28";

(This position is pretty easy).

I'm still >70% convinced that the Glaurung Mjolnir settings are actually stronger than the Defaults. It may be processor dependant but I think here on my computer there is a good chance that the settings are stronger. In some of these Arasan 8 testpostions the defaults, or settings related to the defaults, will have much better solution times though. So what does that mean? That for some positions there is actually a high chance of an inverse relation solution time/speed <-> playing strength? :? :o It is not impossible I think, when sometimes some search instabilities will bring the solution time down but hurt in actual playing strength. For instance in this Saidy - Gulko position the default is a lot faster than the alternative Mjolnir settings. In Shredder - Rybka the same. But I do not trust all the variations that appear, and I also know that the aggressive pruning that Tord has put in Glaurung will sometimes lead to a slightly unbalanced PV.

On the other hand I also made a new setting that is going back to Selectivity 6 AND is using a Maximum Razoring Depth of 4. It is slower in Rybka- Shredder but better than Mjolnir 001b at least in this Saidy - Gulko position. And the variations it is giving out seem pretty steady as well, close to Mjolnir 001b. But how would it do in games? It would need a lot of testing. Working Title: Mjolnir 001g

This was the corresponding result for the Shredder - Rybka position, Mjolnir 001g needs 19 ply to find Bh6. Finding Rae1 Qe7 after no more than 2 minutes, and no switching between Qf2 and Rae1 in the variations before getting Bh6 is possibly just as important as finding Bh6 though.

Running some matches now with Glaurung using the Mjolnir 001g2 settings. I will probably post the results in the Tournaments Forum. I will have to test the Glaurung settings against Belka again because that was the first opponent for Glaurung Mjolnir 001b and Glaurung 2.0.1 Default and I want to have the comparison match. Also the games are usually interesting enough in spite of the fact that Belka is a clone, I hope nobody has great difficulty with it if I post some results later. Glaurung Mjolnir 001g2 was very lucky in the first games keeping them to a draw although with its back against the wall a few times. Very tense!

Belka 1.8.11 - Glaurung 2.0.1 Mjolnir 001g2 first games at twelve minutes + 3 seconds Fischer bonus, slightly different from the first matches but I don't think the timecontrol is the deciding factor :P If you remember the result from Glaurung 2.0.1. Default at 8 minutes + 2 seconds I think you will agree this is not looking so bad:

Belka 1.8.11 - Glaurung 2.0.1 Mjolnir 001g2

1-1 (+0 =2 -0)

1½-½ (+1 =1 -0)

1-1 (+0 =2 -0)

Re: Some thoughts on tactics strength measurements with Glau

Post by jdart »

I'm still >70% convinced that the Glaurung Mjolnir settings are actually stronger than the Defaults. It may be processor dependant but I think here on my computer there is a good chance that the settings are stronger. In some of these Arasan 8 testpostions the defaults, or settings related to the defaults, will have much better solution times though.
I don't think strength is very related to test suite performance. There is some correlation, because Arasan 7.4 (for example) does a lot worse than recent versions on this test, and it is surely weaker. But in general it is only one indicator and you have to look at other tests and game results as well.

Another use of test suites is to find anomalies. I have found a few bugs by observing that some position that should be easy was difficult to find, or other weirdnesses like unusual scores.
