By the way there are tools for watching the CPU temperature for example for ASUS boards.
Yes, a long time ago I downloaded one of these Asus monitorprograms so that I have been able to follow temperature for CPU, Motherboard and informations about the CPU Fan. When I bought the X2 4200+ CPU I was very unsatisfied with the standardcooler (it was very noisy) so I bought one called "Vapochill Micro Ultra low noise". My good IT-friend installed it and it has been a great success. It has a Fan control included and even when this was at its lowest level (around 1100 "swings", at maximum it was around 2300 "swings") it was hard to get the CPU temparature (CPU working 100%) above 45 degrees. Very effective and at 1100 "swings" you hardly hear this cooler.

As you see I have been very careful with my CPU as I expected this piece to be the most vulnerable one when the PC is working 100% non-stop. I'd wish I had would been just as careful with my motherboard (a bigger case and especially removing the dust once a month).

Once a month isn't necessary, but it depends on how dusty your environment is of course. A case with a windowed side panel lets you easily keep any eye on things - although only one of my PCs has that

Hi Per :) ,

don´t be sad. Things will surely improve.

An option instead of buying a new machine in the long run would be to check the prizes for boards on EBay or sell there those parts still working fine and have more time for your girlfriend for example.

At least Klaus and Kurt confirm that they are more relaxed now :) . But I still think it is a fine hobby and will try a few new things in the future, apart from improving what we already have in CEGT. So one or two years more with computer chess I guess. When we have a draw percentage of above 90% between top engines I think I can stop.

Hello Heinz!

Thanks for your words of consolation. Ofcourse I'll "survive" this one but it happends at a very bad time (I don't know if there a is a "good" time for such incidents but still....) when I had started the Positional and Gambit Ratinglist and also running this 40/120 tournament that I enjoyed to follow. As a tester you get used to check your latest testresults when you stand up, when you come home from work, before you go to bed, updating your ratinglists, making some statistics, replaying some of the most interesting games and so on. It's all very exciting (this is the reason we do it) but there is probably also an element of what germans call "Sucht". To say that I suffer from abstinences right now is exaggerated but I really do miss the tests (but my girlfriend certainly doesn't  ).

Yeah, either I am going to sell CPU, RAM, Cooler and other well-functioning elements at EBay or perhaps sell them to my father that owns a VERY old PC (A Pentium II) that is to be replaced quite soon. We'll see.

By the way I saw that 80% of the games in your High-end Marathon match are draws. I agree with you that when the day comes where more than 90% of the games between the topengines are drawn then our hobby will lose some of its attraction. As always I'll follow your testwork with great interest and I really hope that you won't stop in 1 or 2 years. Following Klaus Wlotzka and Kurt Utzinger it would be another huge loss for the community if you left the scene.

Best regards
Per
