Re: Old Laptop for Chess
I have a 10 year-old laptop, a first-gen Celeron 550MHZ, with 256 Ram, that I *still* use for travel chess events. It is running WinME (no gagging please), with Chess Assistant 6, Arena, and has Rybka 3 running as its engine. I told Vas about that and he laughed, "have fun with 3-ply depth analysis....". Actually, it reaches 10-11 plies pretty quickly.terminator wrote:I've got an old laptop that I want to use as backup for chess. Do I go :-
1.) Windows and install Windows 2000 to use as little of the 256 RAM available. Free chess apps like ICC Client, Arena, Playchess, SCID etc
2.) Linux - Ubuntu or Open Suse. Install wine and then possibly install windows apps above.
Any suggestions which route I should go?

I have an updated 4 million game database and full position tree that I use in CA with it. I update and build this on my desktop, and then transfer it via my pen drive.

To run XP reasonably well you should have about 512MB of RAM. I think it would be very easy to find an extra 256MB for your laptop ... either used or new. Maybe even one 512MB chip to replace your older one or possibly add to your older memory. It would cost very little and improve your performance quite a bit. A little research will allow you to know which RAM you need.
