Could be, although I think that derivatives is a more accurate term than clones.
Either word works equally well. Clone and Derivative have many definitions several of which overlap.

The so called clones out there are not 'identical' to what they were cloning. Its no different from what are now termed as derivatives. A few lines of changes here and there.

make multiple identical copies of; "people can clone a sheep nowadays"
knockoff: an unauthorized copy or imitation
A video game clone is a video game or game series which is very similar to or heavily inspired by a previous popular game or game series.
Of course I understand that the current crowd likes to attach heavy connotations to some words. However, I do not use the words in a derogatory manner
