It is a shame in this position that Prodeo did not have the necessary depth or endgame knowledge to see that 89. ... b4! would have drawn the game.

90. Ke5?? Bb3 91. Kd4 Kg2 92. Ke4 Kf2 93. Kf4 Ke2 94. Ke4 Kd2 95. Kd4 Kc2 96. Kc5 Kxb2 97. Kb4 Ka2 98. Kb5 Kxa3 99. Kc5 Kb2 100. Kb5 a3 101. Kc5 a2 {Prodeo 1.1 resigns} 0-1
I must have been watching a different game :) 89. ... b4! should really be 90. b4!.

15 minutes seems a little too short for correcting errors :)

Round 4 in Group A is complete and the results are as follows:

Image

Team Mephisto really hit form in this Round and really stuck it to Team Atari. There were however loads of good games in this encounter. Here is an example of one of the many interesting games:

[Event "Chess Computer Olympiad 2010 - Group A"]
[Site "Hoover, Alabama, USA"]
[Date "2009.12.21"]
[Round "4.2"]
[White "Mephisto London 68020, 60/19m"]
[Black "Atari 800 - Sargon III, LV 5."]
[Result "1-0"]
[ECO "B03"]
[WhiteElo "1800"]
[BlackElo "1800"]
[Annotator "Mind,Spacious"]
[PlyCount "75"]
[EventDate "2009.12.19"]

[d]r6r/pb1pkppp/4pn2/1B2q3/8/2N5/PPP3PP/R2Q1R1K w - - 0 17

Sargon III played the opening better and leads by a pawn. However, 16. ... Bb7? was not the best move and this allows Mephisto London to get back into the game. The London software which is available for several TOP END dedicated Mephisto computers is known for it's defensive game, considered by many collectors to be a very dour and boring style of play. But, here London shows that it can also play some very exciting chess. See how London forces black's King on a chase around the board starting with a nice Rook sacrifice.

Modern Engines Am/Pro also hit good form against Classic Engines and needed to, considering it's loss to Neo Engines in an earlier Round. With Classic Engines having beaten Neo Engines also in an earlier Round, Classic Engines may have started this match as slight favorites.

Most of the games in this 5 Ply tournament are decided in the Endgame. The better players in low ply games seem to always have better endgame knowledge. This game is an example of this where Ikarus needlessly allows the exchange of it's Bishop. Also see how SmarThink's two Black pawns out maneuver White's three pawns!

With Modern Engines having to play Team Mephisto in Round 5, Neo Modern needed a big win to stay close to Modern Engines. Only the will tell if this score is sufficient for a chance to finish second.

I have been quite impressed with the play from the DOS program Grandmaster Chess so far in this Tournament. I am not sure who the author is for this chess program. If anyone knows then please let me know.

Here is another position that looks drawish. This time it is the engine that makes the mistake in the endgame. Throughout this game Prodeo 1.1 seemed to have the edge, but Grandmaster held on and now wins the game.

Rd7? 33. Rxd7 Kxd7 34. Ke3 f5 35. f3 exf3 36. Kf2 Kd6 37. Kxf3 Ke5 38. Ke3 a6 39. a4 Kd5 40. Kd3 h5 41. h4 Ke5 42. b5 axb5 43. axb5 Kd5 44. Ke3 Kc5 45. Kf4 Kd5 46. Kxf5 Kc5 47. g4 hxg4 48. b6 Kxb6 49. Kxg4 Kc5 50. h5 Kd5 51. Kf5 {Prodeo 1.1 resigns} 1-0

The Table after 4 rounds is as follows:

Image

Team Mephisto 68020 qualifies for the next stage. Team Modern Engines look favorites for the second qualification spot. However, technically Neo Classic and Classic Engines still have an outside chance to qualify.

After 8 games the individual program performances are as follows:

Four undefeated programs remain. Gromitchess 1.2 is the only program without any points so far.

The Schedule for Round 5

What surprises me is how much better MP is doing compared to Magellan. Using PS1 and Easy Mode with Magellan.

Yes and likewise the Sterling Perfect Performance of the Dallas 020 which is the weakest member of Team Mephisto

but at fast time controls(low plies) anything can and will happen

Yes with hindsight I should have perhaps made it a complete 68020 Team by including Portorose and Almeria and placing Maggie and MP in another Team. But, that might have been real scary for the competition, when you look at the current status :)

ps. a tidbit of knowledge. Did you know that Almeria was the first chess computer to beat a World Champion in a game? The World Champion being Karpov ?
