i think the point to consumers anyway is that hiarcs was on 8 cores and sjeng was on 120. from a consumer perspective you want the best software, from computer chess fan you just want to the best chess. so i join others in congratulating sjeng on a well deserverd win.

as for the giant clusters having not won as often as theyve won, isn't that due to the big R-word? don't know, just an assumption.

It takes a lot of hard work to get a cluster to work and just because others were not able to doesn't mean that the people who were able to did anything wrong. In fact I think they should be encouraged as that is how the envelope will be pushed. DS was always a strong engine and now it seems even stronger. Some great games even though Rybka was unfortunately absent. I think Komodo showed tremendous potential even though looking at the score of the Junior game it seems that it has a serious bug overlooking several mates in 1. These bugs are to be expected with a work in progress and I think considering that Komodo was playing on a single core, it has shown how evaluation and knowledge based engine can be a great equalizer especially at non blitz time controls. An MP Komodo will be a very interesting prospect indeed.
Deep Junior had the bug, in the final position (which was played under protest) Deep Junior could not beat Komodo with 2 rooks vs a king - a common bug usually due to some hash table glitch or multi-processing bug.

The tournament exposed (in my view) that Komodo still needs some work on king safety.
OK I see, I have to admit I went through the games very quickly and mixed up the engines. Anyway great performance by Komodo and although it was outgunned it did manage to show that good evaluation can blunt the force of a tactical engine. In the game against Crafty it was obvious that it got outsearched in the middle game and seemed much worse, but somehow managed to steer the game into a very GM type draw. Reminds me a lot of how Aronian has been able to steer the games where he is worse into innocuous endings even though material down. Great job and keep up the good work. I look forward to a MP Komodo as I am sure are many others.

Actually I think Junior just gets lost in endgames even simple ones like this. (if I am reading your comment correctly).

Iny my own little engine matches I have seen time and time again that Junior blows a won endgame. That being said it is one my favorite engines to play against. (it is just useless for endgames)

Speaking of bugs Komoda (and doch in previous incarnations) seems to be a little squishy in the Shredder GUI. It has gotten better but it doesn't respond to the analyze game function. Will this be fixed in the for sale version of Komodo?

I want to clean up a lot of thing eventually. The issue right now is that I am not a windows developer and I have no windows hardware. Therefore, I do not have any of the windows GUI's either. So it's almost impossible for me to debug things that involve the interface. Unless of course I can see the bug or problem with xboard under polyglot or Jose or my own testers. From my point of view I do not see any issues or problems, but I also know that there must be some little glitch.

But out of necessity I will probably make a dual boot 64 bit windows laptop out of my laptop machine, as much as I despise windows and how broken it is. I want to have a nice product that everyone likes and can use without hassle.

Actually the latest 64bit Win 7 has been a really nice OS. I usually don't like to praise a MS OS, but really I think they got their act together here. The OS is fast, sleek with a small footprint and very stable.

This is good to know! I have been stuck on XP (which I like) but had been wary of Vista.

Will there be a limit strength feature for the commercial MP? Most of the other commercial engines (except Naum and Zappa that I know of) have that feature and it is great for playing against.

Single core Komodo actually drew vs 120 cores Sjeng with black, in long time control. That's really very good!

I concur, Windows 7 is excellent and by far the best OS they have developed. I have used every commercial OS they have made since Windows 3.11.

Too bad Peter did not run a tournament like this on a weekly basis. A huge undertaking I would think, but the fans would be pleased. :D
