Round one of Bracket A concludes with No. 8 seed Hamsters convincingly defeating No. 9 seed The Baron 5-2.

So Round 1, Bracket A is now complete. There were no upsets, as all the lower seeds won.

Congratulations to the following Bracket A engines who move on to Round 2: Ippolit 0.080b3, Thinker 5.4d Inert, Bright 0.5c, Bison 9.11, Crafty 23.1, Alaric 707, Colossus 2008b and Hamsters 0.7.

And now on to Bracket B, Round 1: First up: No. 1 seed Stockfish vs. No. 16 seed Matacz.

Bracket B, Round One, begins with No. 1 seed Stockfish rolling over No. 16 seed Matacz like a steamroller, winning 5-0. Then No.2 seed Protector had little trouble with No. 15 seed NanoSzachy, winning 4.5-0.5.

Next up: No. 3 seed Critter vs. No. 14 seed Arasan.

Bracket B Round One has now been completed. There was one upset, albeit a mild one, with No. 10 seed Sloppy defeating No. 7 seed SlowBlitzChess 4.5-2.5. It wouldn't be March Madness without at least one Round One upset. Congratulations to Stockfish, Protector, Critter, Frenzee, Delfi, BugChess2, Sloppy, and ProDeo for advancing to Round Two.

As a reminder, you can view the updated results at: http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key= ... l=en#gid=0

I have BOLDED the winners of each match for ease of reading. Now onto Bracket C.

Bracket C for Round One has been completed. There were a lot of 5-0 blowouts in this bracket, but there was one very mild upset, as No. 9 seed Ruffian defeated No. 8 seed Pharaon 4-4, 1.5-0.5. They were tied 4-4 after the regulation 8 games, so I held a 2-game playoff at G/30 time controls.

Now, onto Bracket D. First up: No. 1 seed Rybka vs. No. 16 seed Trace.

Round One is now COMPLETE! Bracket D was completed with no upsets, although there was a thrilling match that went into double overtime with No. 4 seed Naum eeking out the victory against No. 13 Ufim. Regulation ended tied 4-4, and the first OT (at G/30) ended 1-1, so I held a second OT at G/15 that finally produced the victor, Naum, 1.5-0.5.

So Round One is completed and the field reduced to 32 engines. There were only two upsets among the 32 pairings, which I attribute to the great accuracy of the CCRL ratings and rankings. I expect Round Two to have more upsets due to the closer ratings of the pairs.

I have created a second tab on the spreadsheet at the bottom called "Round Two", that I will use for Round Two results. Here is the spreadsheet: http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key= ... l=en#gid=0

Thanks Tracy for running this tournament. It is very interesting. Although, I have prefered to see the latest versions playing.

Carlos

You're welcome. I made a conscious decision to use the highest rated free or open-source 32-bit engines based on the CCRL list at the time I started the tournament. After I've completed this tournament I may do it again based on the lastest CCRL list.

I've been watching this tournament with interest also. I had a similiar
idea but you beat me to the punch. I do hope that you continue with
additional tournaments after this one is done.
