It is the reliable aproach... Your comments make little sense, and seem to be base on nothing but taste. (Poor taste, one gets the impression. ) At WinBoard, we don't care if an approach is 'real' or not, and neither do our users. They just what things to work with as few gitches as possible, and as user friendly as possible. So if we can offer them an overwhelmingly superior solution by using adapter technology, it doesn't stop us that you don't consider that 'real'.

You sound a bit like a guy limping around on a wooden leg, despising the pedestrians that overtake him because "their legs are not made from real wood"...
Just use Arena and forget all those.
I would say, just use WinBoard and forget about all those.

Hi,

as...

as few as possible glitches ... means no adapters, native support for almost everything usefull (and more in the future) and this is what Arena offers, thanks for confirming. In the meantime you can sure use 24 adapters to do the same thing as without adapters at all (like in Arena) just by using WinBoard. But if that is your taste I recomend you use 4 power adapters to run your Laptop/PC/TV... each and making it Europe=>US=>UK=>Taiwan=>Europe

To find out what people are looking for goto Google, type "chess gui" and watch...

So you don't care... this explains a lot...

You seem to confuse what people are looking for with what they find.

Native support "for everything useful" (meaning of course "almost nothing"), no doubt ony for "people that are relevant" (again, almost no one, because it is "not public"...). That is what Arena offers indeed.

Arena has always been infamous for its poor performance and many glitches in these so-called "natively supported" areas. I don't know if you finally managed to improve that, but the native UCI support used to be far more laggy than WinBoard running a UCI engine through the Polyglot adapter, leading to frequent time losses in very fast games. Arena users are just lucky that you are not responsible for the technical development of Arena, and are only in charge of fooling people into using it. Because what you say is appalling nonsense.

The WinBoard vs Arena comparison of a few years ago convincingly shows that a good adapter can outperform a poor native solution by a large margin.

Apparently you have picked up the misconception that people are scared of adapters, so that you now base your campaign of deceit around that term. Fabricating lies about the number of adapters WinBoard would need to do the same thing as Arena.

Have you ever been in Japan, btw? I have. And guess what? I could not use my laptop there. Because the European power plug does not fit the Japanese power outlets. The hotel was friendly enough to borrow me an adapter, though, so I could use it again. If WinBoard is the laptop that needs 4 adapters to run all over the world, Arena is a laptop without adapters that turns out useless outside its place of origin. But don't let that stop your campaign of deceit in favor of the adapterless, useless laptop. Just say that those other places are useless, rather than the laptop.

Hello H.G.,

I hope you will not mind the hijacking which I am perpetuating with my comments...

I think that the native versus adapter facilitated support is a relatively simple matter for anyone to test and to deal with.

Subject Winboard and Arena to a stress test to see if the UCI handling of Winboard handicaps the engine in comparison with Arena.

As for the adapter issue, well, Winboard already supports most engines natively as most engines are Winboard engines - a few support both Winboard and UCI protocols.

When Fabien invented Polyglot, I thought that invention as brilliant and noteworthy as Fruit. He even joked that he wanted it to mean the end of Winboard but instead it made Winboard even more useful.

Does it matter to the user if he does not know that he is working with an adapter? I imagine that what is important is that the thing does what a chess engine does - analyse, play games etc. The setting of engine specific details can be done in a transparent fashion with all options displayed in dialogue boxes and saved.

Various improvements and innovations have been made including to the appearance, variant support (I personally do not play these variants but I want the gui to support them because more is always better than less when it comes to choices!) and tournament types supported including native tournament support for gauntlets and round robin matches.

Winboard on my machine looks distinctly like the CB gui (arrrghh, I confess I like the look!) and does what I want.

Winboard may not be your cup of tea but it is much better than described here by some....

Just my opinion.

Later.

Roger, you surely meant Arena here.

BTW, if my opinion matters here I must tell you that I adore the elegance and functionality of Arena which is second to none. And WinBoard, the old love, which had been taken over once, is competitive again. In fact these times it is very difficult for me to decide which to use for a tournament. Let me express my sincere thanks at this place to Martin and Harm-Geet.

Hello Gabor,

No I meant Winboard.

:-)

Do not misunderstand me, in my universe there is space for an abundance of guis. I do not like the the tone of the Winboard is dead camp as that event has been long in coming.

Arena is a really nice looking piece of software that does what it advertises.

That I prefer Winboard and H.G.'s incredible and fanatical rush to include features merely wished for is no adverse reflection on it at all.
