Nice game. Arasan seems to have played quite well; Chiron played better.

In closed positions if one player happens to understand some particular feature of the position much better than the other, he may win despite being worse at analysis. Another way to put it is that the consequence of a strategic mistake is more likely to be fatal in a closed position than in an open one. With engines still being rather weak in strategic judgment (for example when to close the position and when to open it), the only way to make reasonably sure that the overall better player will win is to keep the game somewhat open in the opening. Otherwise one strategic misjudgment may negate vastly superior ability to analyze variations.
The question is if all engines or almost all engines are the same in strategic judgment(and practically the result in games from closed positions favour the weaker program because there is a good chance that the stronger program does a decisive mistake that both programs do not understand that it is a mistake) or maybe there are better engines and worse engines.

I think that some test suites with closed position may help to answer the question and we have 2 questions to answer about what happen if we test engines from closed positions(that are not drawn positions).

1)Are we going to see smaller difference in rating between engines and more cases that the weaker engine wins relative to normal positions?

2)Are we going to see significant difference in the ranking of engines relative to not testing from closed positions

Note that if engine A is worse in strategical judgment relative to engine B but better in search then I think that it is not fair to say that A is the overall better player relative to B.

Note also that I did not see something unsportive in larry's response.

This does not detract from the play of the winner (which was really good in the Chiron-Komodo game), but no one wins a game in which the opponent makes no mistakes. Anyway, combining the results of the regular and blitz events (which in view of the tiny numbers of games is a reasonable thing to do) Komodo emerged clearly on top, despite the MP situation.
And there you go again! You can't just say well done Chiron for winning the event. You have to somehow "combine" results from two different events to make it seem that Komodo "emerged clearly on top". What is that?

And you spend all your time telling us how much better Komodo is at LTC and now you are raising the roof in celebration over blitz results?

Can you say this for me?

'Nice job Chiron! You beat us this time. Good work!"

Can you say that without any qualifiers?

As much as I respect Larry- I have to agree with you on all counts. He can look at the reasons for the loss, without having to make it public knowledge. It really makes the Komodo team look bad. I am sorry he felt the need to "thank" Chiron in this manner. And combining regular and blitz-"we came out on top": this is about as bad as bad sportsmanship can get. What a shame he saw fit to take that road.

Thanks everyone!

It was a lucky tournament for Chiron: everything went smooth for us while the favorites had problems (as you know, 2 won games lost by Thinker and MP problems for Komodo).

I would like to thanks Gary for his powerful hardware and the book preparation. Chiron always came out of book on positions it felt comfortable with.

Thanks to Peter for organizing the CCT.

Thanks Don for showing a good sportsman like attitude! I sincerely appreciate seeing that from one of the competitors.

Congratulations for winning CCT14 Ubaldo you have written a very strong engine and thank you for inviting me to help.

To Larry, I couldn't stay for the blitz event, so my hardware and book were not used there. It's not valid to combine Chiron's performance in the main and blitz events as in the blitz event it had much weaker hardware and book.

Congrats Chiron and Ubaldo for a very fine win.

It was a good tour to watch and some really good games.

Special mention to Chiron:Loved the c4 move in your game vs Komodo that move deserves a win.

Great Job Don/Larry/Clemens for a fine performance and Blitz win.

That was a pretty nasty comment from you. How do you read that into what I said?

I am tempted to say something that would then require me to moderate myself.
Capital punishment would be more effective as a preventive measure if it were administered prior to the crime.

I agree Don! I believe that you were sincere in your congratulations and did not deserve this particular retort.

Not what you said, what he said. He was ticked off at Larry for not giving a congratulation. If I was commenting on what you said, I would have replied to your post, not his.
