Their only victory, we must take it away.

Suddenly, Houdini,
not know chess.
This is not the version of Komodo that we planned for overtaking Houdini 3 so until there are lot of games I would not expect Komodo to win this one.

Of course I'm delighted to see Komodo do well against Houdini, but perhaps at this time control we can keep the score close.

Thanks for running these games Sean!

You have made tremendous progress,
tremendous, hopefully they can track progress,
only deserve congratulations.

but Houdini so overwhelming .....
Suggests to me that the version of Mr Sean Evans is not working properly.

Remember that Houdini had only three installs, in addition to registration, ect, ect,
If this is not towards the engine works well weaker.

This was checked with this position:
r1b1kn1r/1pq1bp2/1np1p3/2N1N1p1/p2PP2p/P1Q1B1P1/1P3PBP/3R1RK1 b kq - 0 21

evaluation should take approximately +1.50.
Not perhaps with PCs, laptops, ect, something is not right ...

I join also to thank Mr Sean Evans for the tournament. that forever.

His results are not unusual for such a small number of games. It would be if there were 1000 games and we were winning by a non-trivial margin though. But we have received a lot of reports of close scores with non-trivial number of games for long time control matches so there is nothing here that seems out of the ordinary to me.

One thing we are very wary of though is that if someone gets a poor result they probably won't tell us, if they get a really good result we will hear about it with a congratulation. So we do not draw too many conclusions about anything unless we run our own match under our own controlled conditions that we know are fair.

We rarely run matches against specific opponents such as Houdini because our goal is to make Komodo stronger, not beat some specific program. But we will on occasion do this simply to take a measurement of where we stand in relation to the other top programs and Houdini 3 is the most natural choice at the moment. Next year it may be some other program.
Capital punishment would be more effective as a preventive measure if it were administered prior to the crime.

Interesting tactical shot by Komodo starting at move 26 and lasts several moves! It seemed to be something CSTAL would do :D Makes for some exciting chess 8-)

Re: Komodo5.1 v Houdini3 Match - Long Time Controls

Post by Sean Evans »

For those that are playing through the games:

I am very very impressed with the amount of chess knowledge that Komodo is displaying. It is exchanging down in almost every game creating unbalanced and dynamic positions! Yet, the exchange down often puts Komodo ahead on the eval.

Houdini seems to be stuck in the same mode as Rybka, just a pure calculator based on materiality, rather than chess knowledge!

Looks good for the future of Computer Chess if Komodo keeps improving it's positional play.

Cordially,

Sean

Since Sean is nice enough to run the games, it's easy enough for anyone who wants the PGN to make them himself. To recreate a PGN file from the postings here just pretend you are "quoting" these posts as a response and then you can cut and paste the actual PGN source and make your own PGN file.

Capital punishment would be more effective as a preventive measure if it were administered prior to the crime.

Here is an example of the last game he posted - I used the above method for grabbing the raw PGN:

[Event "(120m+10s)/40+(120m+10s)/40+(120m+10s)"]
[Site "?"]
[Date "2013.07.09"]
[Round "13"]
[White "Houdini3"]
[Black "Komodo5.1"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]
[ECO "B90"]
[Annotator "25. -0.23"]
[PlyCount "133"]
[TimeControl "40/7200+10:40/7200+10:7200+10"]

There's even an easier way to get the PGN : click on the b8 square of the board !
