But I guess it will be, other else, they just would have call it Houdini dev instead of Houdini 5.
Actually if Robert is planning on release H5 at the end of the year it would be very likely that what we'd see in TCEC9 is a Houdini dev of H5. He'd probably want to keep working on it even after TCEC9 until it's ready.
So, how much elo would you expect ?

Is it likely H5 will keep support Nalimov EDTBs :?:

H4 supports Nalimov & Syzygy though.

That would depend on how many hours of work Robert has put into it, and I have no idea how much time he has spent on it.

I don't like the idea of starting with H4 and then moving on with H5. That just means that H5 is very raw and needs to be bug fixed. Would be nice to have a new Houdini version that is 70 to 100 ELO stronger than H4.

+1.
No sense in using obsolete H4
He should have more faith in H5.

I'm sure the programmer knows which engine will give him the best chances rather than a random non-programmer who isn't involved in the project.

This is a big surprise, and a good thing for the chess engine world.

At the same time, I'm noticing that Fritz 15 is not listed among the participants.
:?

Yes, Fritz 15 (from Vasik Rajlich) is a kind of Rybka 4.2 .

People seem to have forgotten that this is operating procedure for Houdini.

TCEC Season 5 began with H3.

H4 officially released prior to the season 5 superfinal (which was SF vs K.)

The real issue people should be wondering about.. is also in evidence with season 5, as H4 turned out to only be a tiny bit stronger than H3.

I think it is 3 years since last update, so we can hope Houdini 5 will be a better update than Houdini 4.

It's possible Robert doesn't want anyone trying to tune against Houdini 5!
That might make things more interesting.
Komodo in the late stages has always tuned values against Stockfish.

Should be interesting even if Houdini 5 doesn't win!
The idea alone will make competitors nervous.
