As far as I know the SyzygyProbeLimit parameter in the syzygy reference implementation has two purposes.

1. Ignore tablebase files that contain more pieces than the limit.

2. Ignore the SyzygyProbeDepth parameter for positions that have fewer pieces than SyzygyProbeLimit.

Number 1 can also be achieved by organizing the TB files in different folders and setting SyzygyPath appropriately, so I don't consider that case important.

Number 2 could possibly be useful if 6 men TBs are stored on HD and 5 men TBs are stored on SSD. I suspect the resulting elo gain compared to only using 5 men TBs in this case is rather small though, so I have not tested or implemented this.
