As far as I know the SyzygyProbeLimit parameter in the syzygy reference implementation has two purposes.Marek Soszynski wrote:I see that Texel doesn't have a "Syzygy Probe Limit" whereas Stockfish and Komodo do have that parameter. Does that impact on Texel when using Gaviota tablebases along with only 5-man Syzygy tablebases? In other words, shouldn't Texel have a settable Probe Limit too?
1. Ignore tablebase files that contain more pieces than the limit.
2. Ignore the SyzygyProbeDepth parameter for positions that have fewer pieces than SyzygyProbeLimit.
Number 1 can also be achieved by organizing the TB files in different folders and setting SyzygyPath appropriately, so I don't consider that case important.
Number 2 could possibly be useful if 6 men TBs are stored on HD and 5 men TBs are stored on SSD. I suspect the resulting elo gain compared to only using 5 men TBs in this case is rather small though, so I have not tested or implemented this.
