I managed to view the original book by using proxy in google books

Image

As it seems, google did a typo when digitizing this book.

Solution is mate in 64 moves or less

Solution is mate in 64 moves or less
To get this position White needs 18 moves (6 to get Black King in the corner a8 and 12 b6<->c7 for pawn moves)
[d]k7/8/1Q6/8/8/3pppp1/3prppp/3Kbqrb w - -
Houdini 1.5 shows mate in 26 moves.
It means that the main position:
[d]8/6pp/5p2/k7/3p4/1Q2p3/3prpp1/3Kbqrb w - -
is a mate in 18 + 26 = 44 moves.
Maybe, I can't be friendly, but let me be useful.

Too optimistic !!!
But now I think it can be 55 + 26 = 81 8-)

Since ChestUCI already proved that it's (at least!) a mate in 57, it doesn't make much sense to search for any longer mate.

From EG Magazine 96, June 1989

It is the service of the Austrian Josef
Halumbirek to have found a position
where the condition of immobility of
wK can be dropped. Between 1947 and
1962 he published about 20 problems
using the S2 schema.
