Performance ratings of Komodo in GM handicap matches

7. Material seems to help humans more than moves, when comparing different handicaps with similar engine evals.

We want to measure the relative strength of the players at something resembling the game in question.

These two reasonable statements lead me to consider this hilarious handicap against a 2500-2600 GM:

It was tried against a 2200 FM, and human lost. The total score of "hilarious positional handicaps vs FM" was 3.5/4 for Komodo, so the next step would be to try them against a GM. Humans do indeed feel more comfortable with more material rather than with huge positional advantage against engines. This particular position results in 3-4 tempi and a pawn down for Komodo, and would be a match for a 2500-2600 GM. If GM doesn't go for pawn, he will have to build up a huge positional advantage, which, it seems, more a stronger player thing, and human against Komodo can hardly do it.

This is tougher for me than having a pawn or 2 spare.

Played 2 games with 10' + 10'' for me vs 2' + 2'' for Komodo standard and got only half a point.

Of course, white has better position in both games, but you need time.

Again, 1.e4 is best, it is best in all positions, legal or illegal, strting or otherwise.

My personal opinion is that Komodo scores for both king on e5 and d5 are a bit high, white does not have such an advantage, material is material and temporary factors are temporary factors.

In the position with a king on d5 I even do not find a way to win even a single pawn, just substantial positional advantage, so for me personally, the position with black king on d5 is tougher to play for white.

The 3rd position posted, that is legal, with white pawn on e3 and black pawn on f6, is toughest seemingly, but I did not play any games with it. Black king safely goes to safety, material is equal, opponent does not make mistakes.

Above games are just prima vista, no preparation at all, no deep thought involved, as white has big enough advantage to easily find reasonable, but not optimal moves, however, against Komodo simply playing reasonable moves is no good.

In the second game I even blundered a whole rook , that is life, I largely prefer Komodo having 2 hours and me 2 hours with everything equal, than playing 10 minute blitz, where humans make too many mistakes.

Played also some games with the legal position with a white pawn on e3 and black pawn on f6. (these positions are simply entertaining )

Got roughly 35%, only draws, no wins, better score than with the 2 other positions, probably because I started getting accustomed to playing similar structures.

Still not a single win, a fact I can explain by the excentricity of the position, it is indeed much easier for me to play with 2 pawns up, material stays, while temporary factors wear off, and even with equal material, as in this case I have my well-investigated setups to offer the engine.

My personal opinion is that:
-e3,f6 setup is hardest of all for the handicap-taker
- setup with black king on d5 is harder for the handicap-taker than setup with black king on e5
- all 3 above-mentioned setups are much harder for the handicap-taker than getting 2 pawns edge, as in the last Komodo match, and probably on a par with setups like white pawns on d4,e4, white knight on f3, white on move, like in the Nakamura-Komodo match, or missing f7 black pawn, white on move, do not think the distinction is quite measurable, though Komodo migth give quite different scores.

With experience, it gets of course easier for the human to play with above handicaps.

I also tried some games with reversed colours, white king on e4 or d4, white on move, very interesting ones, maybe a match with 4 games with king on e5 and d5 for black, and king on e4 and d4 for white, might be an intriguing affair.

Below a couple of interesting games (I must also post some wins with this handicap ), please look carefully at game 2, and you will know why I love closed positions.

Komodo is great sparring partner indeed, only regretful thing is that games start getting too long... Once they reach the 100 move barrier on average, I am quitting chess.

Man, how stupid are humans, just saw the evals of the 2nd game, how much I wanted to win it, Komodo shows +200cps to the end, and I simply could not see how to proceed, some open positions are very complicated for a human.
