Syzygy let's the operating system supply the cache. Providing your own would be wasteful.
Probably depends on CPU, memory size and disk type. Eugene and I spent a ton of time testing this and found that a good LRU cache was better due to avoiding decompressing a block that is already in cache. Might not hold today, this was in the pentium pro 200 days. OS filesystem cache works well, at the aforementioned extra computational cost.
