No, it does not degrade. There is a clear technical reason why large pages are faster if the TT is sufficiently large, and that technical reason does not go away over time.mwyoung wrote: ↑Sun Dec 20, 2020 4:47 amLet it run and it degrades.... as I said.syzygy wrote: ↑Sun Dec 20, 2020 1:30 amA simple test gives 1749357 nps without LP, 2133080 nps with LP with a 4GB TT. Not enabling LP is difficult to justify (other than by laziness or lack of Administrator privileges on Windows).mwyoung wrote: ↑Sun Dec 20, 2020 12:58 amThat is not really the point. If you can not, or do not know how to activate LP in windows. You are not missing out on anything.syzygy wrote: ↑Sat Dec 19, 2020 4:56 pmThe official Stockfish has LP enabled since quite a while, so indeed there is no need to use a non-official version to which someone has added LP support.mwyoung wrote: ↑Fri Dec 18, 2020 3:34 amI agree. It does not matter much. Large page are a waste of time. I have tested this, and Large page are not worth the effort. So do not distress if you can not, or do not want to use them. A better version of Stockfish, who does not use Large page. Is worth more then a version of Stockfish that has Large page enabled. I no longer use versions of Stockfish that have Large page enabled.
And LP will not work even if you enable it in the chess engine. Unless you also activate LP support in windows. And LP is not activated by default.
Can You activate large pages in Windows 10 Home?

Thanks Andreas. Quite complicated, but I got 9,5% speedup with your hint and 2 GB hash. But SF bench with 64 MB hash is 20% slower now, why!?

Why?
Best solution for disabling large pages would be an option in the engine but iirc there is no such option in Stockfish.
So the only solution is probably: Replace the Grant-UserRight with Revoke-UserRight in my script. Haven't tested but should work.
Or create and use another Windows user... well, you probably don't want that.

I didn't notice any decrease of speed after some hours use without re-boot. 9,5% speedup remains for SF and clones.

I guess that people who see a decrease in speed over time have inadequate cooling and it is heat throttling that they are seeing.
I have an extra large water cooler in my machine and I also have a ten amp commercial fan I ventilate the case with.

Using Large Pages does not cause the computer to slowdown over time, period. That is total misinformation.Dann Corbit wrote: ↑Mon Dec 21, 2020 8:58 pm I guess that people who see a decrease in speed over time have inadequate cooling and it is heat throttling that they are seeing.

With large pages SF node speed remains constant when You increase hash. Normally it decreases. So gain improves whole time! I got speed-up:
1GB 8,4%
2GB 10,2%
4GB 11,4%
with 6 cores CPU.
